Marco Rubio: "A Band of Patriots Defied an Empire and Changed the World"

Monday, June 22, 2026 by Emma Garcia

On Monday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio invited the public to join the "Salute to America 250" celebration, a monumental Fourth of July event in Washington D.C., commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence as a cornerstone of the American nation.

In a post on his official X account, Rubio stated, "In 1776, a small band of patriots signed a document that defied an empire and changed the world. The Salute to America on July 4th in Washington D.C. will honor that legacy with top-notch music, entertainment, and a record-breaking fireworks display."

The celebration is set to take place at the National Mall, between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, starting at 7:00 p.m., and tickets are available for free through freedom250.org.

The program will feature over 300 military musicians, flyovers, and aerial displays, a speech by President Donald Trump, and a fireworks show designed to set a Guinness World Record.

Pyrotecnico has been hired to execute the show, which will include over 850,000 effects in 40 minutes from 10 launch points spread throughout the capital.

More than a million attendees are expected, potentially making it one of the most heavily attended events in Washington D.C.'s history.

Freedom250 Anniversary Celebration

The event is part of the celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of American independence, organized under the public-private partnership Freedom250, associated with the White House.

In a video accompanying his post, Rubio further extended the invitation: "We gather to honor that sacred legacy with a night of world-class music and entertainment and a fireworks show that will light up the sky. Come celebrate the American miracle and the future we are building together."

The extensive security operation for the celebrations was announced on Sunday by Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin, who coordinated with local and state law enforcement agencies across the country.

"We will witness a world-record-breaking fireworks display. We will see every state represented on the National Mall, highlighting what each brings and the greatness the past 250 years have brought to America," Mullin told Fox News.

Controversies and Artistic Withdrawals

The event has not been without controversy: artists such as Martina McBride, Young MC, and Morris Day and The Time withdrew, citing they were not informed of the event's political nature.

Trump responded to these withdrawals by comparing his drawing power to that of Elvis Presley.

As part of the State Department's global #Freedom250 campaign, the U.S. Embassy in Cuba issued a call on Monday asking Cubans for messages about freedom, extending the celebrations' reach beyond U.S. borders.

Rubio, the first Hispanic to hold the position of Secretary of State, has been a central figure in promoting these celebrations both domestically and internationally, conveying the message of freedom that the Trump administration aims to project during the nation's 250th anniversary.
