Markwayne Mullin, the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, revealed on Sunday that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is orchestrating a comprehensive security operation to safeguard the 4th of July festivities, marking the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Mullin shared this information during an interview on Fox News, emphasizing that the coordination involves local and state law enforcement agencies nationwide.
"You'll see a substantial security presence. We will be safe. We're going to celebrate, enjoy, and prepare America for the next 250 years," stated the secretary.
Mullin also praised President Donald Trump regarding the scale of the celebrations: "No one throws a party like the president."
The main event, titled Salute to America 250 Celebration & Fireworks, is set to take place at the National Mall in Washington D.C., between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
The program will feature over 300 military musicians, flyovers and aerial displays, and a presidential address from Trump before the fireworks display.
Regarding the fireworks, Mullin was clear: "We will witness a world-record-breaking fireworks launch. Every state will be represented at the National Mall, highlighting what each contributes and the greatness that the past 250 years have brought to America."
Pyrotecnico has been contracted to attempt a Guinness World Record with the display, and more than a million attendees are expected at the venue.
With the 4th of July falling on a Saturday this year, a particularly high turnout and increased mobility across the country are anticipated.
The Trump administration has turned this anniversary into an unprecedented event under the America250 initiative, with numerous renovation projects in the nation's capital, including the construction of a 250-foot-tall Arc de Triomphe and the renovation of the East Wing of the White House with private funding.
Mullin, who took charge of the DHS on March 24 after being confirmed by the Senate with a 54-45 vote, highlighted his team's readiness: "While we have much work ahead at the Department, we have the best men and women; we wake up every day thinking about how to improve the protection of our nation."
For the Cuban community residing in the United States, the 4th of July holds particular significance as a symbol of freedom against authoritarianism, especially in cities like Miami and Tampa, where Independence Day celebrations bring together thousands of Cuban-American families each year.
The security operation announced on Sunday will be the largest ever deployed for a July 4th celebration in recent U.S. history, marking the nation's semiquincentennial.
