Russian President Vladimir Putin was the first international leader to reach out to Donald Trump on his 80th birthday, which was celebrated this past Sunday, June 14. The two had a 55-minute phone call described by the Kremlin as "friendly and straightforward."

Trump himself acknowledged publicly that Putin was the first one to call him that day, according to a report by Russian news agency TASS, which cited Kremlin presidential advisor Yuri Ushakov. This call marked their first direct communication in about six weeks since they discussed a ceasefire proposal related to Victory Day on April 29.

A Heartfelt Message from Putin

In a message posted on the Kremlin's website, President Putin wrote: "Dear Mr. President, dear Donald, I wholeheartedly congratulate you, a remarkable and distinguished person and politician, on your 80th birthday."

The Russian leader emphasized the mutual understanding between them, which allows them to have open and candid discussions on even the most complex bilateral and international issues.

Ushakov highlighted that President Putin's birthday message was very sincere and affectionate, reflecting the nature of their relationship. Although no physical gift was sent, the Kremlin described the gesture as "particularly meaningful."

Discussion on International Issues

Beyond the birthday wishes, the call also touched on three major international topics.

Regarding Ukraine, Trump stressed the need to end military operations and expressed his willingness to exert pressure on European partners and Kyiv during the G7 summit, which was set to begin that same Monday in Évian, France. Putin remarked that Ukrainian attacks on Russian civilian infrastructure "will not alter the battlefield situation" and criticized Zelenski.

On Iran, Trump informed Putin that the United States was near reaching an agreement with Tehran and expressed gratitude for mediation efforts by Russia and Pakistan. Both leaders agreed that special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner would soon return to Moscow to continue consultations.

Zelenski's Call to Trump

Before the conversation with Putin, Zelenski had also phoned Trump, extending his birthday greetings in a 30-minute call. He thanked Trump for military support "from Javelins to Patriots" and updated him on the front-line situation.

The following day, at the G7 summit in Évian, Trump stated: "We had a very good conversation yesterday with President Zelenski and President Putin, and I think we might be able to accomplish something. I truly believe it. Both are open to it."

Aftermath: Attack on Kyiv's Cathedral

However, diplomatic rhetoric clashed with battlefield reality. Just hours after the call, Russia launched an assault with drones and missiles severely damaging the Cathedral of the Dormition at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra monastery, a nearly 1,000-year-old UNESCO-protected site.

The attack resulted in 11 fatalities and 53 injuries across Ukraine. In Kharkiv, five rescuers lost their lives while attempting to save civilians.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot compared the attack to bombing Notre Dame. His Ukrainian counterpart, Andrii Sybiha, stated that Russia had surpassed ISIS in crimes against cultural heritage.

The G7 summit in Évian continues until June 17, with the war in Ukraine as a central focus. French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his intent to persuade Washington to increase pressure on Moscow, arguing that "a good negotiation would mean Ukraine and Russia sitting at the same table, with Europeans and Americans present."
