Wildfire Sweeps Through Miami-Dade County Threatening Power Lines

Tuesday, June 16, 2026 by Sofia Valdez

A massive wildfire spread across western Miami-Dade County on Monday, engulfing several acres of thick vegetation and posing a threat to nearby power lines.

The blaze was situated near the intersection of Northwest 137th Avenue and Northwest 25th Street in the unincorporated western region of the county, adjacent to the Everglades.

The Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department deployed multiple units to the site, escalating the incident to a three-alarm status, which involves a significant mobilization of ground and aerial resources.

Firefighting helicopters were observed dumping water on the flames, while authorities also called in support from the Florida Forest Service.

Aerial footage from Telemundo 51's helicopter revealed massive plumes of gray smoke rising from the area, with active flames consuming what appears to be mangrove or swamp vegetation typical of the Everglades.

One of the impacted areas burned dangerously close to a cluster of power lines, creating a dual risk: potential power outages from infrastructure damage and the chance of sparks accelerating the fire's spread.

By approximately 4:00 p.m. on Monday, authorities reported that the fire was 60% contained.

No structural damage or road closures were reported at the time of the update.

Public health advisories were issued, urging individuals with respiratory conditions to stay indoors and use air conditioning to recirculate air in their homes and vehicles.

The fire occurred under red flag conditions, characterized by low humidity and strong winds that favor rapid fire spread in South Florida.

Western Miami-Dade has frequently experienced large fires throughout 2026. In May, the "Max Road Fire" scorched 5,650 acres in the Everglades, affecting both Miami-Dade and Broward counties, while in April, the "Highway 41 Fire" burned over 6,500 acres with zero percent containment initially.

Authorities noted that the situation was ongoing and urged the public to stay alert for official updates.
