The Finlay Institute of Vaccines announced on Sunday the passing of Humberto González Rodríguez, who served as the Vice Director of Industrial Operations and dedicated over 35 years to vaccine development in Cuba.

The announcement was made via the institute's official Facebook page, stating: "With deep sadness, we announce the passing of our dear colleague Humberto González."

The institution highlighted González Rodríguez's lifelong commitment to the organization: "He started his journey in our facilities at a young age and eventually became Vice Director of Industrial Operations."

For more than three decades, González was recognized not only for his professionalism and dedication but also for his unwavering support and innovative solutions that enhanced the team's efforts. "His legacy is woven into every process, every vaccine, and every corner of the Institute he helped build and improve," the statement added.

González Rodríguez graduated as a Chemical Engineer from the José Antonio Echeverría Higher Polytechnic Institute in 2006 and earned a Master's degree in Process Biotechnology Engineering in 2010, according to his profile on the Finlay Institute's official site. In 2013, he was appointed as the Director of Development before assuming the vice director role in Industrial Operations.

His scientific career was distinguished by the Cuban Academy of Sciences Annual Award on two occasions: in 2008 for "Design, Development, and Evaluation of a New Mucosal Adjuvant in the Form of Cochleate" and in 2015 for "Heptavalent Conjugate Vaccine Candidate Against Pneumococci: From Research Hypothesis to Phase-I Clinical Evaluation." He was also a member of the Scientific Societies of Pharmacology, Immunology, and Chemistry.

The news of his passing sparked widespread reactions among colleagues and friends on social media. Eliseo Salinas, a co-worker, remarked, "We lost a great colleague who had recently become a significant leader within the institution, handling his responsibilities with great care." Ramón Barberá Morales praised him as "an excellent person, very intelligent and dedicated," while Yoander Delgado mentioned, "Those who dedicate their lives with passion are always remembered fondly. You did just that."

Many comments expressed shock at his untimely death. "So young," Rosabel Manso Ruiz wrote succinctly. Filadelfa Vidal Aguilar offered a thought that captured the general sentiment: "Death is not real when the work of life has been fulfilled. He fulfilled it abundantly."

His passing comes at a critical time for Cuban biotechnology. On June 5th, Russia and Cuba announced a partnership to develop cancer vaccines during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, with the Finlay Institute playing a central role.

The institute, known for developing the Soberana 02 and Soberana Plus COVID-19 vaccines and internationally recognized products like VA-MENGOC-BC and Quimi-Vio, is simultaneously grappling with the severe economic crisis in Cuba, which has left pharmacies empty and hospitals lacking essential supplies across the island.

This is not the first time the Finlay Institute mourns the loss of a high-ranking scientist. In April 2021, Gustavo Sierra González, a pioneer of Cuban biotechnology and creator of the BC antimeningococcal vaccine, passed away. He was a foundational figure of the very institution that González Rodríguez helped shape for over 30 years.

The Finlay Institute did not disclose the cause of Humberto González's death or details about the funeral arrangements. Our deepest condolences go out to his family and loved ones.
