Lionel Messi took to his official Instagram account on Saturday to share a series of five captivating photos accompanied by the caption "20062026." This post celebrates his remarkable 20-year journey through the World Cups, just as he prepares for his sixth tournament.

The images visually chronicle his transformation from an 18-year-old prodigy in Germany 2006 to the seasoned world champion entering the 2026 tournament. Notably, one picture features a touching moment with Diego Armando Maradona, who coached Argentina during the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. This serves as an emotional tribute to the legendary figure who passed away in November 2020.

The post quickly gained traction, amassing over 2.4 million likes and nearly 48,000 comments within hours.

As highlighted by the Spanish sports outlet AS, Messi's illustrious career is defined not only by his extraordinary skills but also by his enduring presence: "Two decades of the finest football the world has witnessed."

The 2026 World Cup, set to be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, marks Messi's unprecedented sixth appearance in the tournament's history.

In his previous five appearances—Germany 2006, South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014, Russia 2018, and Qatar 2022—Messi played in 26 matches, setting a new record for World Cup appearances, surpassing Germany's Lothar Matthäus. He has scored 13 goals and provided eight assists along the way.

His World Cup journey reached its pinnacle in Qatar 2022, where he led Argentina to victory, scoring seven goals and contributing three assists in seven matches. He was honored as the tournament's Best Player for the second time, an accolade he also earned in Brazil 2014.

This Instagram post comes at a time of symbolic significance for the Argentine star. In late May, Messi experienced a left hamstring strain during a match with Inter Miami, raising concerns in Argentina just days before the tournament's start.

Nonetheless, subsequent medical reports ruled out any serious injury, and by June 11, his recovery was confirmed, dispelling doubts about his participation.

Argentina, the reigning world champion and FIFA's top-ranked team, enters the tournament with 17 players from the Qatar 2022 winning squad, led by Messi in their quest for a fourth World Cup title.

Head coach Lionel Scaloni had previously remarked that initial reports about Messi's injury were "not so bad," and time has proven him right.

Argentina is set to make its debut in the 2026 World Cup next Monday against Algeria at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, within Group J, which also includes Austria and Jordan.
