A coalition of opposition groups and civil society organizations in Cuba are calling for justice and a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Jesús Alberto Martínez Fernández, a 26-year-old who died this week in Palma Soriano, Santiago de Cuba.

The passing of Martínez Fernández has sparked widespread solidarity with his family, who are well-known figures in the opposition activism scene in the eastern region of the country.

His mother, Dénia Fernández Rey, was a former member of the Ladies in White, serves as the director of the Latin American Federation of Rural Women (FLAMUR) in Santiago de Cuba, and coordinates the Women’s Network of Cuba in the eastern part of the island.

His father, Alberto Martínez, is recognized by opposition groups as the director of the Republican Party of Cuba.

In a statement released on social media, the Women's Network of Cuba expressed "profound sorrow and indignation" over Martínez Fernández's death, identifying him as a leader within the youth opposition movement, Impacto Juvenil.

"We extend our deepest condolences and solidarity to his parents, Dénia Fernández Rey and Alberto Martínez," the organization stated, while also linking the incident to the deteriorating public safety situation on the island and demanding clarity on the events.

Meanwhile, FLAMUR voiced its "deep grief and shock" over what it described as a "heinous murder," urging action against the rising tide of violence and crime in Cuba.

"We cannot remain silent in the face of such barbarity. Crime and violence are claiming lives and sowing grief among Cuban families," declared the organization in a public statement.

The Council for Democratic Transition in Cuba also conveyed its condolences to the young man's family and expressed its dismay over the news.

Reactions have proliferated on social media, with activists, opposition members, and residents of Palma Soriano sharing messages of support for the family and demanding justice.

According to accounts from family, friends, and activists, Jesús Alberto Martínez Fernández died after being injured in a violent incident near Bar Galaxy, also known as El Villar.

As of now, Cuban authorities have not provided a detailed official account of the incident or the progress of the investigation.

Amidst their mourning, Dénia Fernández Rey has alleged irregularities in the medical care her son received and claimed that she was threatened by police and state security agents during the funeral arrangements. These allegations have not been independently verified.

The absence of official information about the case has fueled demands from family members, activists, and civil organizations for a transparent investigation to elucidate what happened and assign accountability.
