A dramatic rescue unfolded as Border Patrol agents alongside Texas Department of Public Safety troops saved 39 migrants, including several from Cuba, from a trailer engulfed in flames following a police pursuit in southern Texas.
This incident took place on June 4 and was captured on video, which was later released by U.S. authorities this past Friday.
The chase initiated at 8:36 p.m. when a vehicle approached the Border Patrol checkpoint in Falfurrias, located in Encino, Texas. A detection dog alerted officers, prompting them to order a secondary inspection.
However, the driver, identified as Jairo Juli Holguín-Florentino, ignored the order, sped off heading north on US 281, and then turned south towards Hidalgo County, disregarding tire deflation devices set up by law enforcement.
The trailer erupted into flames because Holguín-Florentino continued driving on punctured tires until the vehicle ignited approximately six miles north of Linn.
After apprehending Holguín-Florentino and his companion, Cristian Johansel Mirambeaux-Martínez—identified as his son-in-law in the criminal complaint—agents heard cries coming from within the burning trailer.
Efforts to forcibly remove the lock were unsuccessful, compelling the agents to request keys from the detainees to unlock the door, revealing 39 individuals trapped inside as the vehicle burned.
Radio communications during the rescue vividly reported: "We are extracting individuals from the trailer's rear, about 30 of them," and "people are confirmed inside the trailer."
The rescued migrants hailed from Brazil, Cuba, Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela. All received medical attention, and no serious injuries were reported.
Two migrants disclosed they had been picked up from "safe houses" in Roma and Edinburg, Texas, and identified the detainees as those who loaded them into the trailer.
On June 7, a formal criminal complaint was filed against the two suspects, charging them with federal conspiracy to transport aliens in a manner endangering their lives.
The case is under joint investigation by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the Border Patrol, and the Customs and Border Protection Office of Professional Responsibility.
