On Friday, Facebook and Instagram experienced a significant global outage, leaving thousands unable to access these popular Meta platforms. Reports from users and monitoring sites began surfacing in the early morning hours.

Initial disruptions were reported around 9:44 AM in the Americas and 2:36 PM BST in the United Kingdom, with Downdetector documenting a peak of over 104,000 incidents, compared to the usual baseline of just 11.

Both web and mobile versions were affected, as users struggled with login issues, non-loading feeds, and undelivered direct messages.

Instagram's desktop version displayed the error message, "Sorry, this page isn't available," while Facebook's mobile app only showed older cached content, failing to load new posts.

According to Downdetector, 68% of Instagram users reported app-related issues, 12% faced login problems, and 10% encountered server connection difficulties.

The outage also impacted Threads and, according to some reports, WhatsApp, other elements within the Meta ecosystem.

Social Media Users Turn to Alternatives Amid Outage

During the downtime, users migrated to platforms like X and TikTok to stay informed. WhatsApp and Telegram served as alternative messaging tools for those who could access them.

On X, comments and memes about the situation quickly proliferated. Users shared sentiments such as "Meta is down again," "Let's go back to Fotolog," and "Of course, Meta crashes while I'm snooping through old Messenger chats."

Meta's Historical Outage Pattern

As of this report's closure, Meta has not released an official statement regarding the cause of the outage or an estimated time for service restoration.

This isn't the first time Meta's platforms have experienced widespread disruption. In March 2024, a similar global outage occurred, lasting roughly two hours and affecting numerous users. Another incident in December of the same year impacted Facebook, Instagram, and Threads for a comparable duration.

The most severe outage took place on October 4, 2021, when all Meta platforms were down for nearly seven hours due to a configuration error in the company's backbone network, rendering its DNS servers inaccessible. This incident reportedly cost an estimated $100 million in lost revenue.

Historically, these types of outages are typically resolved within hours once technical teams identify the issue. However, Meta often does not disclose the technical cause immediately.
