The Catholic Bishops' Conference of Cuba (COCC) has announced that Bishop Silvano Pedroso Montalvo, who oversees the diocese of Guantánamo-Baracoa, is in a "critical condition" after being diagnosed with cancer while in Rome.

According to an official statement from the COCC Secretariat, the bishop arrived in Havana on June 3rd from the Italian capital, where medical tests revealed the presence of a cancerous disease.

While in Rome, Bishop Pedroso Montalvo received care at the Gemelli Hospital—a renowned center that has treated several popes—and at the infirmary of the Society of Jesus.

Upon his return to Cuba, he initially stayed with the Compassionist Sisters in Havana before being moved to the infirmary of the Daughters of Charity, located next to the Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital, to ensure he remains under strict medical supervision.

The COCC emphasized the seriousness of his condition, stating, "At this moment, his health is very delicate, and visits are exhausting for him."

The episcopal body has called upon the faithful to keep the bishop in their prayers, hoping that "the grace of God may sustain and strengthen him."

The illness traces back to February of this year, when Bishop Pedroso Montalvo traveled to Rome for the ad limina visit of Cuban bishops to Pope Leo XIV. This mandatory periodic audience involves presenting a pastoral report on their dioceses.

He was the only Cuban bishop able to make the trip, as a severe fuel crisis prevented the rest of the delegation from traveling.

After meeting with the Pope on February 20th, the COCC reported on February 23rd that the bishop remained in Rome suffering from severe gastritis and awaiting diagnostic tests.

These tests ultimately led to the confirmed cancer diagnosis.

Born in Cárdenas on April 25, 1953, Bishop Pedroso Montalvo is the first Afro-Cuban bishop, appointed by Pope Francis in March 2018, and has led the diocese of Guantánamo-Baracoa since June 9 of that year.

The statement was also shared by the Diocese of Cienfuegos on social media, extending its reach among Cuban believers both on the island and abroad.
