The 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (24th MEU) of the U.S. Marines conducted a long-range fast rope insertion exercise on June 4 at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba.

This Thursday, the U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) reported on the exercise through its official account. The maneuver was executed from a UH-1Y Venom helicopter belonging to the Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 365 (Reinforced), with the unit organized as the Littoral Combat Force-24 (LCF-24).

The technique used, known as fast rope or FRIES system, enables assault forces to rapidly descend from a hovering helicopter without the need to land, thereby minimizing the aircraft's exposure time.

SOUTHCOM framed the exercise as part of Operation Southern Spear, a campaign led by the Department of Defense aimed at disrupting illicit drug trafficking, deterring hostile actors, and securing the U.S. mainland through continuous presence in the area of responsibility.

Heightened Tensions between Washington and Havana

On May 17, an intelligence report released by Axios indicated that Cuba had acquired over 300 military drones from Russia and Iran since 2023, with potential scenarios discussed for deploying them against the Guantanamo base, U.S. military vessels, and possibly Key West.

In response, Washington deployed the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier to the Caribbean on May 20 and activated Operation Southern Spear. On May 29, more than 1,300 Marines and sailors from the 24th MEU assumed their mission in the Caribbean under the command of Colonel Ryan Lynch.

On the same day, the head of Southern Command, General Francis L. Donovan, visited Guantanamo and met with Cuban General Roberto Legrá Sotolongo, the first deputy minister and chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, in a meeting described by the regime as "positive."

Secretary of Defense Visits Guantanamo

This Wednesday, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth visited the Guantanamo base and issued the most direct warnings to date to the Cuban regime.

He stated that "it would be unwise for the Cuban government to attempt to acquire or gain access to weaponry types capable of reaching this base or the U.S. mainland," adding that doing so would "invite a confrontation they neither desire nor can withstand."

Hegseth also proclaimed the "Donroe Doctrine" in Guantanamo, declaring, "We are reclaiming our hemisphere."

Meanwhile, Miguel Díaz-Canel warned last Sunday that any U.S. military action against Cuba could lead to a "bloodbath."

Hegseth summarized Washington's stance to the deployed troops at the base: "The future of Cuba lies in the hands of the President of the United States and the leadership of Cuba."
