In a shocking turn of events, a botched burglary in Miami Gardens led to a man's death and the largest drug seizure ever recorded by the local Police Department.
Authorities confiscated over 42 kilograms of narcotics from a residence, with an estimated street value of five million dollars.
The incident unfolded at approximately 1:35 a.m. on Tuesday, June 9, in the 3600 block of NW 173rd Street.
Officers discovered a man lying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to the head. He was rushed to HCA Florida Aventura Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The identity of the man and potential charges against the neighbor who shot him have not been disclosed.
The Burglary Attempt Gone Wrong
According to NBC Miami, the suspect attempted to rob the home, where resident Anthony Enrique Gordon, 50, answered the door. A struggle ensued, during which the suspect fired his weapon.
Gordon's girlfriend, Danette Larae Young, 58, fled to a neighbor's house seeking help. The neighbor responded by shooting the suspect in the head, resulting in his death.
Unexpected Twist: Victims Turn Out to Be Suspects
Initially, Gordon and Young presented themselves to authorities as victims of the break-in. However, as part of the homicide investigation, a search warrant was executed at their residence, uncovering a major drug operation.
Inside, investigators found 42 kilograms of various drugs, including cocaine, MDMA, Xanax, and marijuana, along with multiple types of ammunition and nearly 1.4 million dollars in cash, as reported by the Miami Herald.
The Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office concluded that the motive behind the burglary was drug-related.
A Historic Drug Seizure in Miami Gardens
An official statement from the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office described the operation as the largest drug bust in the Miami Gardens Police Department's history. The case was a joint effort between the State Attorney's Gun Violence Initiative Unit (GVI) and the Miami Gardens Police Department.
State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle emphasized the significance of the discovery:
“What began as a burglary investigation quickly uncovered a significant narcotics operation hidden in plain sight. This record-breaking seizure sends a clear message: drug trafficking will not be tolerated in our community.”
Miami Gardens Police Chief Delma Noel-Pratt also praised the outcome.
“I am extremely proud of the hard work and dedication of the men and women of our department. This achievement is a direct result of the partnerships we've built with our state and federal partners, the State Attorney’s Office, and the ongoing trust and cooperation we receive from our community,” she stated.
Legal Troubles for Gordon and Young
Gordon is facing charges, including trafficking in cocaine, oxycodone, amphetamines, and fentanyl, trafficking in illegal drugs, possession of controlled substances without a prescription, trafficking in stolen property, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Young is facing similar charges, including trafficking in cocaine, cannabis, oxycodone, amphetamines, and fentanyl, as well as possession of controlled substances without a prescription and trafficking in stolen property.
Both have been held without bail at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center (TGK) in Miami-Dade, according to jail records cited by the Miami Herald.
This case adds to a series of significant drug-related operations in South Florida this year. In May, the Coast Guard seized 900 pounds of cocaine valued at 6.7 million dollars near Key Biscayne. That same month, a drug trafficking network smuggling cocaine from Colombia was dismantled in Miami, resulting in the seizure of 536 kilograms of the substance, 14 weapons, and nearly 500,000 dollars in cash.
