The Central University "Marta Abreu" of Las Villas (UCLV) has expressed its deep sorrow over the death of Dr. C. Alina Hereira Díaz, a distinguished professor and a pioneering force behind the Center for Applied Chemistry Studies (CEQA) at the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy, located in Santa Clara, Villa Clara.

The announcement appeared on UCLV's official social media channels through an institutional condolence card, though details regarding the cause or exact date of her passing were not disclosed.

The magazine Juventud Técnica joined in mourning her loss, offering condolences and highlighting that she "dedicated her life to teaching and research."

Hereira Díaz was instrumental in teaching Spectroscopy to students pursuing degrees in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Chemistry. She was renowned for "imparting knowledge and values to generations of undergraduate and graduate students," as noted by Juventud Técnica.

In the latter part of her career, her research was closely linked to the CIDEM (Center for Research and Development of Structures and Materials at UCLV), where she "contributed with dedication and scientific rigor to the advancement of applied chemistry in Cuba," according to the university's official statement.

CEQA, the institution she helped establish, originated on April 1, 1989, initially named the Center for Explosives Studies. It was formed through an agreement between the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces and the Ministry of Higher Education, later adopting its current name in 2004 when it officially became part of the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy.

The center focuses on research concerning technological and environmental risks, the treatment of toxic waste, and providing scientific-technical services in chemical and physicochemical analysis.

The passing of Dr. Hereira Díaz is one in a series of recent losses within the Cuban academic community, including a professor from the University of Pinar del Río who died in May and a young university instructor from Holguín whose death in March shocked many.

UCLV concluded its message with a heartfelt sentiment reflecting the university community's collective grief: "Her academic and human legacy will remain in the memory of students, colleagues, and the entire university community."
