Broward County, located in southern Florida, is set to upgrade its 911 emergency system with cutting-edge technology that will enable residents to stream live video directly to dispatchers during emergencies, as revealed by local officials.
On Tuesday, county commissioners approved a $25 million contract with Motorola Solutions, spread over a decade, which will finance the comprehensive overhaul of the emergency dispatch system.
This revamped system will not only facilitate real-time video streaming but also allow the transmission of recorded videos, photos, and text messages to 911 operators. Additionally, it will feature enhanced capabilities for digitally tracking caller locations.
Broward Mayor Mark Bogen described the technological advancement vividly: “This elevates it to a completely new level of technology. It’s akin to moving from dial-up to high-speed internet.”
Bogen elaborated on the transformative nature of the tool: “You can send a video to the 911 operator to show your location and the situation at hand.”
The system will also refine the accuracy with which dispatchers pinpoint a caller's location: “It gives the person answering the phone a better chance to understand what's happening and to accurately identify the caller and their location,” Bogen noted.
The mayor highlighted the broader impact of this modernization: “It truly offers our law enforcement and 911 dispatch a more comprehensive picture of how they can assist those in need.”
This contract will be funded by the state’s 911 fee managed by the Florida Department of Management Services, ensuring no additional direct cost burden on county taxpayers.
A similar technological setup is already operational in neighboring Miami-Dade County, where the Carbyne c-Live Universe platform was launched through a pilot program in 2022, demonstrating improvements in response times and life-saving capabilities.
Broward, one of Florida’s most populous counties with over 1.9 million residents, handles tens of thousands of calls annually at its dispatch center.
Nationwide, the rollout of the Next Generation 911 system varies significantly, and according to Police Chief Magazine, no county yet possesses a fully integrated system, positioning southern Florida as a trailblazer in this digital transformation.
Bogen concluded his advocacy for the measure with a straightforward statement: “Ensuring public safety is invaluable. Saving even a single life is worth it.”
