The Union of Young Communists (UJC), along with various mass organizations, student groups, and youth movements, have called upon the citizens of Havana to gather this Friday at the José Martí Anti-Imperialist Platform. The gathering aims to show solidarity with Raúl Castro following the criminal charges brought against him by the United States Department of Justice.
Scheduled for 7:30 a.m. on Friday, May 22, the event is intended, according to a notice from Canal Caribe, to "denounce the despicable and infamous actions of the U.S. Department of Justice against Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, a leader of the Cuban Revolution, and to support the statement from the revolutionary government."
This mobilization also serves as a tribute, coinciding with the 95th birthday of Raúl Castro, born on June 3, 1931. The call to action follows the Department of Justice's recent federal charges against the former Cuban leader for the downing of two Brothers to the Rescue aircraft on February 24, 1996. This incident led to the deaths of four Cuban Americans: Armando Alejandre Jr., Carlos Costa, Mario de la Peña, and Pablo Morales, whose bodies were never recovered.
The charges against Castro include conspiracy to murder American citizens, four counts of murder, and two counts of aircraft destruction. In addition to Raúl Castro, the indictment extends to five other Cuban military officers: Lorenzo Alberto Pérez Pérez, Emilio José Palacio Blanco, José Fidel Gual Bárzaga, Raúl Simanca Cárdenas, and Luis Raúl González-Pardo Rodríguez.
The announcement was made last Wednesday at the Freedom Tower in Miami by acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, alongside U.S. Attorney Jason A. Reding Quiñones and FBI Deputy Director Christopher G. Raia.
The Cuban regime's response was swift and coordinated. President Miguel Díaz-Canel dismissed the charges as a "political maneuver without any legal basis," while Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz labeled them a "farce" and described Brothers to the Rescue as a "narco-terrorist organization."
The regime also vowed "fierce resistance" to any actions resulting from the charges, and Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez lashed out at Senator Marco Rubio, accusing him of being a mouthpiece for "corrupt and vengeful interests."
The Legacy of the Anti-Imperialist Platform
The José Martí Anti-Imperialist Platform, situated across from the U.S. Embassy on Havana's Malecón, was inaugurated in April 2000 during the Elián González crisis. It has historically been used by the Cuban regime for politically charged rallies with anti-American sentiment.
Analysts view the indictment as largely symbolic: Raúl Castro is 94 years old, has never set foot on U.S. soil, and there is no extradition treaty between Cuba and the United States.
Meanwhile, the Brigade 2506 has stated that prosecuting Raúl Castro "is merely the first step."
