Lucrecia Speaks Out on Charges Against Raúl Castro: "He Must Face the Consequences"

Wednesday, May 20, 2026 by Michael Hernandez

Cuban singer Lucrecia (Pérez Sáez) responded with emotion and hope on Wednesday to the news that Raúl Castro has been charged by the U.S. justice system. She summed up this historic moment with a poignant statement: “Everything is falling into place, especially since today is Republic Day, a date they once tried to erase.”

This past Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Justice unveiled a new indictment against the 94-year-old Raúl Castro, charging him with being responsible for the downing of two civilian planes belonging to the Brothers to the Rescue organization on February 24, 1996. The charges include conspiracy to murder U.S. citizens, destruction of civilian aircraft, and four counts of murder for the deaths of Armando Alejandre Jr., Carlos Costa, Mario de la Peña, and Pablo Morales, whose bodies were never retrieved.

Symbolic Timing of Charges

During a live interview with Tania Costa, Lucrecia highlighted the symbolic weight of the timing, as the charges were made public on Cuba’s Independence Day, marking the Republic’s anniversary from 1902.

“Cuba has gone through so much, and continues to endure, but now there is recognition for those brave individuals who risked their lives to rescue Cubans escaping by sea. Their lives were unjustly extinguished,” the artist stated.

Lucrecia's Personal Connection and Hope for Justice

Lucrecia, who was banned in Cuba for composing the soundtrack for the documentary "Balseros," which depicted the tragic journeys of those fleeing the island on rafts, expressed her firm stance on the judicial future. “What must happen will happen. He will have to face the consequences and be tried in the United States. I am sure it will happen. We must have faith.”

The lack of an extradition treaty between Cuba and the United States presents a challenge to the immediate practical impact of the charges, something Lucrecia noted with a sense of realism: “It’s all very slow, but what matters is that the news is out and the world knows about it. Thanks to the digital platforms, the world is aware of what is happening.”

Cuban Regime's Response

Meanwhile, the regime in Cuba responded predictably: Díaz-Canel defended Raúl Castro following the announcement of the charges, while Havana dismissed the Brothers to the Rescue case as a “deception.”

Lucrecia concluded her comments with a vision for the future that blends past suffering with hope: “We are in ashes in Cuba. Yet, I believe that Cuba will once again become the pearl of the Caribbean. After everything passes, Cuba will rise from the ashes like a phoenix, and it will be wonderful.”
