The video is part of the #Freedom250 campaign, an international effort by U.S. embassies to celebrate the 250th anniversary of America's independence, which will be commemorated on July 4, 2026.
"Martí's ideas continue to remind us that freedom belongs to all who believe in human dignity and the power of people to transform their societies," stated the embassy in the message accompanying the post.
The diplomatic mission added that "his vision of freedom, dignity, and individual rights continues to inspire generations in Cuba and throughout the hemisphere."
The video highlights Tampa, Florida's historical significance as a key hub for the Cuban independence movement.
"Many expeditions departed from Tampa to aid the independence cause. Numerous independence heroes met, prepared here in Tampa, and set out from this city," the transcript of the material notes.
The piece also mentions the San Carlos Institute in Key West, celebrating its 1892 achievement of uniting both Cuban and non-Cuban supporters of the independence cause.
It was at this institute that Martí spearheaded the creation of the Cuban Revolutionary Party, officially founded on April 10, 1892, to unify exiled Cubans.
This publication is part of a broader wave of symbolic gestures from Washington towards Cuba.
Charge d'affaires Mike Hammer congratulated the Cuban people on May 20, marking the anniversary of the proclamation of the Republic of Cuba in 1902, a date removed from the official calendar by the regime following the 1959 Revolution.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio also delivered a message to the Cuban people, emphasizing that May 20 was the day "the Cuban flag flew for the first time over an independent country."
This isn't the first instance of the embassy using Martí's legacy to associate with values of freedom, countering the official narrative of the Cuban regime, which also venerates Martí but from a revolutionary perspective.
On January 28, the 157th anniversary of Martí's birth, Hammer declared that the national hero "reminds us that freedom is not just a right won, but a responsibility."
In May 2025, the charge d'affaires visited Martí's grave at Santa Ifigenia Cemetery in Santiago de Cuba, quoting Martí's phrase: "Respect for the freedom and thought of others... is my fanaticism."
