The Cuban Embassy to the Holy See orchestrated a mass on Friday dedicated to "peace and social development in Cuba" at Rome's Church of Saint Ignatius of Loyola. The ceremony was led by Cardinal Michael Czerny, head of the Vatican's Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, as reported by the Cuban Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Among the attendees were the regime's ambassador to the Vatican, Leyde Rodríguez, Cuba's representative in Italy, Jorge Luis Cepero, the church's rector Father Vincenzo D'Adamo, and Jesuit priest Massimo Névola.

Additionally, Miguel Barnet, a writer and former president of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC), known for his staunch support of the Castro regime, participated while visiting Rome.

In his sermon, Cardinal Czerny brought "before the Lord's altar the sufferings, hopes, and expectations of the Cuban people," urging for "sincere dialogue that can overcome propaganda, inflexibility, and mutual distrust."

He emphasized that "freedom demands real spaces for participation, listening, and shared responsibility," while "justice calls for concrete attention to those who suffer the most."

The cardinal warned that "any logic of permanent confrontation risks exacerbating the burden already placed on ordinary people, especially the poorest, the elderly, the sick, and children."

On the topic of humanitarian aid, Cardinal Czerny was clear: "Humanitarian assistance should arrive in sufficient quantity and without obstacles, never to be used for political or geopolitical ends."

Diplomatic Dynamics Surrounding Cuba and the Vatican

This mass occurs amid heightened diplomatic activities involving Cuba and the Vatican. On May 7, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican to discuss the Cuban situation and the potential of channeling aid through the Catholic Church.

In the following days, the U.S. offered $100 million in humanitarian aid to Cuba, with plans for distribution by Caritas and independent organizations, excluding the Cuban government from the process.

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla initially dismissed the offer as "a fable" and "a lie," but the regime later softened its stance, expressing no "objections to working with the Catholic Church" to distribute the funds.

Yaxys Cires, Director of Strategies at the Cuban Observatory for Human Rights (OCDH), noted after the Rubio-Leo XIV meeting that "the Holy See and the Cuban Church are stabilizing forces supporting the Cuban people now, and will play crucial roles in the national reconstruction process."

Cardinal Czerny concluded his homily with an appeal to Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre: "May she accompany this nation on its path with her maternal protection and keep all her children in peace."
