Trump Declares China Visit a "Remarkable Triumph" and "Historic Moment"

Saturday, May 16, 2026 by Edward Lopez

Upon arriving back at the White House from his state visit to China, Donald Trump hailed the trip as a "remarkable triumph" and a "historic moment." The president expressed his enthusiasm immediately after stepping off Air Force One.

"All I can say is it was a tremendous success... We secured substantial agreements, including significant trade deals. A lot happened, and you'll gradually learn about everything, but it was a remarkable triumph. I genuinely believe it marked a historic moment," the U.S. president stated regarding his journey, which occurred from May 13 to 15.

This visit marked the first time a sitting U.S. president had traveled to China in nearly nine years, following Barack Obama's 2017 trip. It was part of efforts to solidify the trade truce agreed upon at the Busan summit on October 30, 2025, where Trump and Xi Jinping met face-to-face for the first time in six years, coinciding with the APEC summit.

A key highlight of the agenda was the bilateral meeting with Xi Jinping held on Thursday in the Great Hall of the People. This session, lasting approximately two hours, was followed by a state banquet.

Trump also disclosed that he had the rare opportunity to visit Xi's private residence in Zhongnanhai, a privilege seldom afforded to foreign leaders: "I went to where he lives… We had lunch together," he remarked.

One of the major commercial announcements was China's commitment to purchase over 200 Boeing airplanes, with the potential for up to 750 aircraft if initial deliveries meet expectations.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer additionally announced that China had agreed to make annual agricultural purchases worth "billions in double digits" over three years, covering products like soybeans, energy resources, and medical devices.

Despite these announcements, the markets reacted with skepticism. Soybean futures dipped more than 36 cents per bushel after the summit, due to a lack of concrete details. Media outlets such as NBC News observed that Trump returned with "very few clear victories."

Trump formally invited Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan to visit the United States on September 24, 2026, and described the bilateral relationship as one that "will be better than ever."

The issue of Cuba also surfaced during the visit. China urged Washington to lift the embargo and sanctions against the island. Back at the White House, a journalist questioned Trump about this matter, though he gave no detailed response.

Days before his trip to Beijing, Trump had expressed his intentions on Truth Social: "Cuba is asking for help, and we are going to talk!" He further commented to the press, "Cuba is not doing well. It's a failed nation, and we will discuss Cuba at the right time."

The Trump administration has imposed over 240 sanctions on Cuba since January 2026, including an executive order dated May 1, which enforces secondary sanctions against foreign entities operating with the island. Additionally, direct sanctions were placed on the Cuban regime's business conglomerate, GAESA, as announced by Secretary of State Marco Rubio on May 7.
