On Thursday, President Donald Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to share a lengthy message that reinterpreted Chinese President Xi Jinping's comments on a potential U.S. decline. Trump concluded with an optimistic hope: "May our relationship with China be stronger and better than ever."

The post was made at 5:42 PM on May 14, during Trump's state visit to Beijing, the first by a sitting U.S. president in nearly nine years and the first by Trump himself since November 2017.

In his message, Trump argued that Xi's reference to the United States as "perhaps a nation in decline" was directed solely at the Biden administration era, not the current Republican leadership.

"In that regard, he was 100% right," Trump wrote, listing what he termed as the previous administration's failures, including open borders, high taxes, diversity and inclusion policies, and "terrible" trade deals.

Trump contrasted this with what he described as America's resurgence during his "16 spectacular months" in office, citing record stock market highs and pension funds, $18 trillion in foreign investments, the strongest job market ever, the "military decimation" of Iran, and what he called a "military victory" in Venezuela.

"President Xi congratulated me on so many tremendous successes in such a short time," Trump stated in his post.

Highlights of the Bilateral Summit

The bilateral summit at the Great Hall of the People lasted around two hours, featuring a military honors welcome ceremony, a visit to the Temple of Heaven—making Trump only the second U.S. president to visit since Gerald Ford in 1975—and a state banquet hosted by Xi.

Chinese President Xi urged Washington to "be partners, not rivals," emphasizing that "the common interests of China and the U.S. outweigh their differences." However, he also issued a warning regarding Taiwan, noting that mishandling the issue could lead to "clashes and even conflicts" between the two powers.

Trump extended an invitation to Xi Jinping to visit the United States during the meeting and highlighted the longstanding personal relationship he shares with the Chinese leader: "It is the longest relationship between presidents of both countries that has ever existed, and that, to me, is an honor."

Trade Truce and Future Prospects

The summit aimed to solidify the trade truce agreed upon in Busan, South Korea, in October 2025, which suspended tariffs that had risen to 145% by Washington and 125% by Beijing. The agenda included potential Chinese purchases of Boeing aircraft, agricultural products, and energy cooperation, along with the establishment of a bilateral Trade Board to manage non-sensitive products.

Amid the summit, the Kremlin announced Putin's upcoming visit to China, adding a geopolitical dimension to the Trump-Xi meeting.

Trump concluded his post with a blend of self-praise and diplomatic aspiration: "Two years ago, we were, in fact, a nation in decline. In that, I fully agree with President Xi. But now, America is the hottest nation in the world."
