Ramón Lauzurique-González, a 55-year-old Cuban national, was taken into custody this Wednesday in Miami after allegedly shooting his roommate during a heated argument spurred by jealousy. This information comes from Local 10, which accessed the arrest report from the Miami Police Department.
The altercation transpired around 5:05 p.m. in an apartment located in the 3400 block of Southwest 10th Street. Although this address falls within the Little Havana neighborhood, the police report lists it as Coral Gables.
Lauzurique-González is facing a charge of second-degree attempted murder with a firearm or deadly weapon, a first-degree felony in Florida that carries a potential sentence of up to 30 years in prison.
Investigations revealed that the victim had been living in the apartment for about three months with his wife, Lauzurique-González, and his ex-wife, who is also the victim's wife's sister.
On the day of the shooting, the suspect argued with his ex-wife, accusing her of divorcing him due to her alleged attraction to the victim. Before returning to the apartment, the ex-wife informed investigators that Lauzurique-González left, stating in Spanish, "I'm going to solve a problem."
He allegedly re-entered through a different doorway, armed with a black handgun, aimed it at the victim, and shouted "Today I'm going to kill you" before opening fire, as a witness recounted to detectives.
The victim sustained a gunshot wound to the right shoulder and was struck on the head with the weapon while attempting to disarm the shooter. Despite his injuries, he managed to wrestle the gun away from Lauzurique-González and escape the apartment.
The police recovered the firearm near the main entrance and apprehended the suspect shortly afterward near the intersection of Southwest 34th Avenue and Southwest 7th Street.
Before his arrest, Lauzurique-González made a spontaneous statement in Spanish to the arresting officer, which was withheld from the public report. After being informed of his constitutional rights, he also confessed something to the detectives, which was similarly redacted from the released report.
Both the victim and two witnesses identified the suspect in separate photographic lineups.
Previous incidents of domestic violence in the Cuban community of Miami have been reported, such as the arrest of a man accused of killing his wife and stepson last April, or the case of a Cuban held for domestic violence who died in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement earlier this month.
Under Florida's "10-20-Life" law, firing a weapon carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years, regardless of the maximum penalty applicable to the charge.
As of Thursday, Lauzurique-González remained detained at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami-Dade County, with bail "to be determined" pending his initial court appearance.
