Sixteen-year-old Cuban teenager Jonathan David Muir Burgos appeared "extremely weak" and emotionally distressed during a visit from his parents on Monday at the Canaleta Provincial Prison in Ciego de Ávila, where he has been held since March.

Mario Félix Lleonart, an evangelical pastor and director of the Patmos Institute now exiled in the United States, shared a message from Jonathan's father, Pastor Elier Muir Ávila, following the visit. "Our son is not well; he feels very weak and is not receiving any medication," reported Martí Noticias.

The family found the farewell particularly heartbreaking.

“As they parted, Elier saw him standing behind bars, crying with a very sad expression. He told me, 'I left feeling very sad today; it breaks my heart,'” Lleonart recounted.

Arrest and Incarceration

Jonathan was detained on March 16 alongside his father after responding to a police summons in Morón, following alleged participation in the March 13 protests in the city. These protests erupted in response to over 26-hour daily blackouts and severe food shortages.

While his father was released hours later, Jonathan was transferred to Canaleta, a maximum-security adult prison, despite being only 16.

Serious Health Concerns

Morón's Municipal Prosecutor's Office has charged him with sabotage, a crime that carries a sentence of seven to 15 years in prison.

Jonathan's health has visibly deteriorated, suffering from severe dyshidrosis, streptococcal and staphylococcal infections, two untreated intestinal parasites, vasovagal crises leading to disorientation, and malnutrition. He receives only one meal a day in a small disposable cup.

In the early hours of April 23, Jonathan reached out to his father in tears: "Dad, please get me out of here; I can't take it anymore."

Propaganda and Legal Challenges

The regime attempted to counter the allegations by releasing a photo through the official media outlet Razones de Cuba, showing Jonathan playing the piano during a cultural event in prison—an act the family and activists condemned as propaganda.

Lleonart also highlighted that nearly two months after the arrest, the authorities have not provided the family with any official documentation confirming the minor's imprisonment.

"It is tragic that there is not a single document to officially prove Jonathan's imprisonment, while the regime insists internationally that there are no political or conscience prisoners in Cuba," Lleonart asserted.

International Response and Health Concerns

On April 24, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) granted precautionary measures to Jonathan through Resolution 30/2026, recognizing the threat to his life, personal integrity, and health. The Cuban government ignored a prior request sent by the organization on April 10.

Cuban-American Congressman Mario Díaz-Balart demanded, "From the United States, we demand FREEDOM now for Jonathan David Muir Burgos! No child should be persecuted or imprisoned for raising their voice against a dictatorship."

Jonathan had a medical appointment scheduled at a Washington D.C. hospital for May 20, 2026, which has been postponed for the eighth time since 2023 due to delays in obtaining a humanitarian visa, while his health continues to decline within Canaleta.
