The renowned Cuban athlete Yarisleidis Cirilo secured a silver medal on Sunday in the C1-200 meter race, often regarded as the premier event in sprint canoeing, at the World Cup held in Szeged, Hungary. She clocked an impressive time of 44.19 seconds.

According to the JIT site, the Guantanamo-born canoeist was narrowly defeated by Ukraine's Liudmyla Luzan, who clinched the gold with a time of 43.23 seconds. Completing the podium was another Ukrainian, Iryna Fedoriv, finishing in 44.35 seconds.

The day held dual significance for Cirilo: it marked her 24th birthday and coincided with Mother's Day in Cuba. Thus, her medal became a symbolic tribute to her mother, Yaritza Dubois, and to all the mothers on the island.

This achievement adds to her success from the previous day when Cirilo, alongside her teammate Yinnolis Franchesca López, took home the gold in the double canoe 200-meter event. It was their first major victory as a pair on the international stage.

In that Saturday final, the Cuban duo posted a time of 41.53 seconds, surpassing teams from China, who took silver with 41.67 seconds, and Uzbekistan, who earned bronze with 42.04 seconds. This result highlights Cuba's rising competitiveness in the global arena of sprint canoeing.

Cirilo boasts an impressive track record, underscoring her status as a dominant figure in the sport. She earned a bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics in the same C1-200 meter event, becoming the first Cuban woman to achieve an Olympic medal in sprint canoeing.

Before her Olympic success, Cirilo was crowned world champion in Duisburg 2023 and snagged gold at the Pan American Games in Santiago that same year. In July 2025, she again topped the podium at the Under-23 World Championships in Montemor-o-Velho, Portugal, becoming the only competitor to break the 48-second barrier.

Cirilo has a particularly favorable history in Szeged, having previously stood on the podium in past editions, including a silver at the 2021 Canoe Sprint World Cup in the same Hungarian city.

The 2026 Szeged World Cup, held from May 8 to 10, marks the inaugural stop of the season's circuit, providing crucial points for ranking and qualification toward the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

Cirilo and López also competed in the C2-500 meters on Friday, advancing to the semifinals with a time of 2:00.54 minutes, demonstrating the breadth of their preparation for the upcoming Olympic cycle.

Both athletes are set to compete in the second stop of the circuit, taking place in Brandenburg, Germany, from May 14 to 17.
