Authorities in Camagüey have arrested a man on the run from justice who was caught in the act of committing a crime in the Salomé neighborhood, according to an official source.

The arrest occurred as the individual was caught in the act and subsequently handed over to the courts, as reported by the Facebook page "Truths Through the Mobile," which is associated with the Ministry of the Interior (Minint).

No details were provided regarding the identity of the detainee, the specific crime he was involved in at the time, or the reasons for his fugitive status.

It has become a pattern for official channels to announce successful apprehensions without addressing how these inmates managed to escape or what systemic failures allowed it.

The police action was praised in typical triumphant fashion: "This operation underscores the relentless efforts of our law enforcement to ensure public safety and uphold the law. A safer Camagüey is the mission of a tireless police force."

However, this capture comes amid rising insecurity in Camagüey. In April, during a single week, two women were assaulted with knives near the Railroad Terminal, with the attackers stealing their bicycles.

In Esmeralda, Camagüey, a worker was fatally shot during an attempted robbery while guarding a food warehouse.

The Salomé neighborhood itself was rocked by violence in August 2024 when a 23-year-old was stabbed to death by a man who was out on prison leave for a previous crime and fled after the attack.

Numerous prison breaks have been reported across various provinces over the past year. Last December, Camagüey police captured an escapee from the La Empresita Open Unit in a "lightning operation" on San Ramón Street, thanks to tips from locals.

That same month, a fugitive from Boniato prison in Santiago de Cuba was apprehended in Guantánamo while involved in the illegal slaughter of cattle.

Nationwide, the public security crisis remains unrelenting. The independent Cuban Citizens’ Audit Observatory documented 2,833 verified crimes in 2025, marking a 115% increase over 2024 and a staggering 337% rise compared to 2023. The predominant crime, theft, accounted for 1,536 cases, a 479% surge since 2023.

Approximately 20% of police officers have left the force in the past year, further weakening the institutional response to a criminality that continues to grow under 67 years of dictatorship.
