On Wednesday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived at the Vatican to meet with Pope Leo XIV in the private library of the Apostolic Palace. This visit aims to mend diplomatic ties between Washington and the Holy See following weeks of open tension between the pontiff and President Donald Trump.

The Vatican Press Office has confirmed that the audience will take place this Thursday.

This marks the second meeting between the two leaders. Their first encounter occurred on May 19, 2025, a day after the inaugural mass of the pontificate, where Rubio was accompanied by Vice President JD Vance.

Focus on Middle East and Western Hemisphere

Thomas Pigott, spokesperson for the State Department, mentioned that Rubio will engage with the Vatican leadership to discuss issues in the Middle East and mutual interests in the Western Hemisphere, with a particular emphasis on Cuba.

During a press briefing at the White House on Tuesday, Rubio expressed his intention to discuss with the Pope the distribution of humanitarian aid in Cuba through the Catholic Church, highlighting that the Díaz-Canel regime is obstructing this distribution.

"We are prepared to provide more humanitarian aid to Cuba, but the Cuban regime must allow us to do so," the Secretary of State asserted.

Humanitarian Aid and Historical Mediation

The United States already sent $6 million in February 2026 through Caritas Cuba, with an additional $9 million earmarked for victims of Hurricane Melissa in eastern Cuba. Washington aims to channel these funds through ecclesiastical means as well.

The Vatican has a history of mediating between Washington and Havana, having facilitated the rapprochement between Obama and Raúl Castro from 2014 to 2016 and, under Biden, contributing to the release of 553 Cuban prisoners.

In March, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican's Secretary of State, stated that the Holy See has taken "necessary steps to promote a negotiated solution in Cuba."

Unprecedented Tensions with Trump Administration

This visit occurs amid an unprecedented tension between Trump and Pope Leo XIV. The conflict erupted on April 7 when the Pope described as "truly unacceptable" Trump's threat to "destroy an entire civilization" in Iran. Trump retaliated on social media, calling the Pope "weak on crime" and "terrible at foreign policy," even stating, "If I weren't in the White House, Leo wouldn't be in the Vatican."

The Pope replied from the papal plane, "I have no fear of the Trump administration," and later declared he has no interest in debating with the President. Nevertheless, Trump attacked the pontiff again this week, accusing him of "endangering many Catholics" with his stance on Iran.

The tensions extended to Italy when Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni defended the Pope, and Trump deemed her "unacceptable," threatening to withdraw U.S. troops from Italy, Spain, and Germany. Rubio is set to meet with Meloni on Friday before returning to Washington.

Rubio, rather than Vance—the highest-ranking Catholic in the administration who also criticized the Pope for focusing on theology instead of politics—has been tasked with restoring relations with the Holy See.

Pope Leo XIV has personal connections to Cuba as well; his maternal ancestry traces back to 18th-century Havana, and he visited the island in 2008, 2011, and 2019 as the superior general of the Augustinians.

Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni encapsulated the spirit of the meeting, stating, "His Holiness looks forward to frank exchanges on promoting peace and human rights."
