A Cuban woman tragically lost her life early Tuesday morning after being attacked with a knife by her former partner in the kitchen of the bar "La Hija de Cuauhtémoc," located in Supermanzana 510 on Cancún Avenue, Quintana Roo, Mexico.
The alleged assailant, identified as José Antonio "N," also of Cuban nationality, was employed at the same establishment as the victim. Authorities from the Cancún Police confirmed that the two had previously been in a romantic relationship.
Reports indicate that the pair were having a heated argument in the kitchen when José Antonio "N" repeatedly stabbed the woman before fleeing the bar on foot.
Colleagues who witnessed the attack chose to flee the scene, fearing for their own safety.
Paramedics from the Emergency Medical and Rescue Squad (ERUM) arrived at the scene but unfortunately found that the woman had succumbed to her injuries, showing no vital signs.
The identity of the victim has not yet been made public by authorities.
Thanks to vigilant patrol efforts, Cancún Police officers shortly located an individual matching the suspect's description within the same Region 510 vicinity.
Upon his arrest, José Antonio "N" exhibited visible bloodstains on his clothing and reacted aggressively towards law enforcement, "shouting insults and physically and verbally attacking the officers," according to the police statement.
He was taken into custody on charges of resisting and disobeying authorities and was handed over to the Quintana Roo State Attorney General's Office (FGE).
The FGE has launched an investigation under the femicide protocol to ascertain the details of the incident and the potential culpability of the suspect.
As of now, it remains unclear whether any prior reports of violence between the involved parties exist.
Rising Violence in Cancún
The crime occurred in an area notorious for violence. "La Hija de Cuauhtémoc" is located just meters away from another venue, "Carbonero," where a triple murder took place that same night, resulting in three fatalities and one injury during a shooting.
Cancún is home to a significant Cuban migrant community — the third-largest foreign population in the state according to the 2020 census — many of whom are employed in the precarious informal sector of bars and restaurants.
Independent organizations such as Alas Tensas and Yo Sí Te Creo Cuba report that in 2025, there were 12 recorded femicides of Cuban women abroad, with Mexico being one of the countries with the highest incidence, documenting two such cases.
The suspect remains in the custody of the Public Prosecutor as the FGE determines his legal status under the femicide protocol.
