Emotional Homecoming: TikToker's Return to Cuba Sparks Heartwarming Community Reception

Tuesday, May 5, 2026 by Robert Castillo

A Cuban TikToker known as "La negrita de rey" shared an emotional video on April 28 capturing her return to Cuba after a two-year absence. The heartwarming images of her community's welcome have touched many.

The 57-second clip, filmed from an elevated view during nighttime, reveals a large gathering of people outdoors—possibly in a park or open space—coming together to greet her.

"After two years... we're home again," she wrote over the footage, accompanied by the Cuban flag and a red heart emoji.

The video's description succinctly captures the emotions felt by countless Cubans in similar circumstances: "Two years of waiting, a hug worth it all" and "Returning to Cuba isn't just a journey… it's a feeling."

Cubans Document Emotional Returns on TikTok

"La negrita de rey's" reunion is part of a growing trend on TikTok where Cubans in the diaspora share their returns to the island after years apart, sparking widespread reactions within the global Cuban community.

In January, TikTok user @barbara.ana18 celebrated her return from the United States with a grand neighborhood party in Cienfuegos, complete with a conga line.

In March, @nanyliam96 was welcomed with a red carpet laid out on a dirt road, a humorous and spontaneous gesture that amused many.

In April, Maithe Domenech shared her reunion after two years away with the poignant phrase: "I put a band-aid on my heart."

Similarly, in April, Yaniuska López returned from Angola, asserting that "coming back doesn't mean failing,” a sentiment that resonated with those feeling the societal pressure surrounding the idea of return.

In September 2025, another migrant was greeted with a massive celebration in his neighborhood after seven years abroad, even amidst a widespread blackout.

And earlier this year, another Cuban returned to the island after a 12-year absence, touching the hearts of thousands.

Behind each of these videos lies a harsh reality: over a million Cubans have left the island since 2021, reducing the population from 11.3 million to between 8.6 and 8.8 million—a drop of approximately 24%, according to Bloomberg Línea.

The Harsh Reality of Cuban Migration

The ongoing economic crisis, prolonged power outages, and political repression have extended family separations for years, making every return a profoundly emotional event.

A poignant example is the story of a young girl anticipating a birthday gift, only to discover her surprise was her father's return. "Only those of us who experience this distance truly understand the feeling," wrote the father in his post.
