Brazilian Activist from Cuban Flotilla Now Facing Terror Charges in Israel

Tuesday, May 5, 2026 by Isabella Sanchez

Thiago Ávila, a Brazilian activist involved in the humanitarian flotilla that reached Cuba in March with slogans supporting the Cuban regime, is now facing terrorism charges in Israel. He was detained after the Israeli Navy intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla in international Mediterranean waters.

An Israeli court in Ashkelon extended Ávila's detention for six more days on Tuesday, following a request from Israeli police to continue investigating alleged links with Hamas.

Intercepted En Route to Gaza

The interception occurred on April 29, approximately 100 kilometers west of Crete, Greece, as the flotilla attempted to reach Gaza despite Israeli warnings.

Out of roughly 175 activists apprehended during the operation, around 170 were deported to Greek shores. Ávila, alongside Spanish-Palestinian Saif Abukeshek, was taken to Israeli territory for further investigation into potential ties with Hamas. Since his arrest, Ávila has been on a hunger strike.

Legal Defense Challenges Charges

Hadeel Abu Salih, Ávila's lawyer from the legal group Adalah, dismissed the charges as "unsubstantiated suspicions" and criticized the attempt to link "this humanitarian mission delivering aid to Gaza's civilians with terrorist activities."

Previous Involvement in Cuban Convoy

This case has a direct connection to Cuba: weeks before his Israeli arrest, Ávila participated in the "Convoy Nuestra América," dubbed "Granma 2.0" by its organizers. The convoy departed from Chelem, Yucatán, on March 21 and arrived in Havana on March 24 with approximately 30 tons of food, medicine, solar panels, and technological equipment.

The convoy, which included around 500 participants from at least 30 countries, was warmly received by the Cuban regime, including Fernando González, president of ICAP and a former Cuban spy convicted in the United States.

During the Havana port arrival, chants such as "Cuba yes, blockade no!" and "For whatever, Fidel" were heard. Ávila declared, "This is an act of historical retribution because Cuba is the most supportive nation on the planet."

The activist also stated, "Since 1959, Cuba has been a beacon of sovereignty and dignity," during an official ceremony with regime authorities.

Denied Entry into Argentina

On March 31, shortly after the Cuban convoy, Argentina denied Ávila entry at Buenos Aires' Jorge Newbery Airport, where he was traveling to participate in the local chapter launch of the flotilla to Gaza, citing "false tourism" as the official reason.

Ávila's wife, Lara Souza, told EFE news agency, "The police told Thiago that he is not welcome in Argentina and would not be allowed entry."

Israel had previously intercepted more than 40 vessels from an earlier flotilla in September 2025, detaining 473 crew members.
