A traffic accident on Monday morning in the Las Nuevas area of La Sierpe municipality resulted in three injuries, with one person in critical condition. This information was reported by the Escambray newspaper, citing sources from the Camilo Cienfuegos Provincial General Hospital in Sancti Spíritus.

The injured individuals were being transported to this key medical facility in the province, while health institutions in Sancti Spíritus were preparing to provide necessary care.

The Integrated Medical Emergency System (SIUM) was promptly activated following the incident, though at the time of the initial report, details regarding the cause of the accident or the types of vehicles involved had not been disclosed.

Las Nuevas is one of six Popular Councils within La Sierpe, the least densely populated municipality in Sancti Spíritus, with roughly 16,042 residents spread across an area of 1,034 square kilometers in the southern part of the province.

This incident occurs amidst a severe road accident crisis in Cuba. In 2025, traffic accidents claimed 750 lives and injured 6,718 people nationwide, with a total of 7,538 incidents reported.

The year 2026 has been equally grim on Cuban roads. In January, a massive accident in Camagüey left 38 people injured, and in February, a tragedy on the National Highway near Sancti Spíritus resulted in four fatalities and 17 injuries, several of whom were treated at the same Camilo Cienfuegos Hospital.

Just this past Sunday, a major bus accident in Cienfuegos resulted in dozens of injuries, with the first fatality confirmed on Monday: 34-year-old Lorena Isabel Hernández Bassa.

Cuban authorities attribute 72% of road accidents to human error, mainly due to the failure to yield the right of way, inattentiveness while driving, and excessive speed. Motorcycles, mopeds, and pedestrians are involved in 63% of the accidents recorded on the island.

The report on the La Sierpe accident was initially published as "under development," with updates on the condition of the injured and the causes of the incident expected in the coming hours.
