Frederich Cepeda: A Legendary Presence Shines Amidst the Decline of Cuban Baseball

Sunday, May 3, 2026 by Amelia Soto

At the age of 46 and with 27 seasons under his belt, Frederich Cepeda made history on Saturday by becoming the first player to achieve 2,600 hits in Cuba's national baseball tournaments. This unprecedented milestone adds another chapter to the island's sports chronicles.

The historic hit occurred at Victoria de Girón Stadium during the opening game of the IV Elite League, facing pitcher José Carlos Quesada of the Matanzas Crocodiles, as reported by the Escambray weekly.

Known as the "Gallo Mayor," the veteran from Sancti Spíritus is not playing with his long-time team, the Sancti Spíritus Roosters, in this tournament. Instead, he has been called as a reinforcement for the Mayabeque Hurricanes, seizing this chance to further cement his legacy among the greatest hitters in Cuba's domestic baseball history.

As per the records of statistician Benigno Daquinta, Cepeda concluded the last National Series with 2,599 hits, needing just the first game of the new league to break past this barrier.

Interestingly, his closest competitor in the historical ranking of hits, Yordanis Samón—with 2,567 hits—also wears the Mayabeque jersey in this competition.

The 2,600-hit milestone is just the latest in a series of records Cepeda has amassed over recent years. In November 2025, he became the all-time leader in runs batted in during the National Series, reaching 1,513 RBIs and surpassing Santiago's Orestes Kindelán, with a three-run homer—marking the 383rd home run of his domestic career.

Back in April 2025, Cepeda claimed the title of hit king by surpassing Danel Castro's record of 2,502 hits.

Now, he's eyeing another landmark: just 17 runs shy of 1,600, a feat only achieved by Havana's Enrique Díaz, who scored 1,638 runs over 26 seasons.

All of this unfolds against the backdrop of Cuban baseball's steepest historical crisis: power outages lasting up to 20 hours disrupt games, stadiums are in disrepair, teams lack food and basic resources, and there's a massive exodus of talent.

Nearly 40 Cuban prospects signed with Major League organizations in the 2024-2025 period, Cuba was ousted in the first round of the 2026 World Baseball Classic, and was excluded from that year's Caribbean Series.

Amidst this institutional decay, Cepeda's enduring presence at 46 is nothing short of remarkable.

The player himself, however, prefers to look forward rather than dwell on record books: "I'm very happy for the opportunity to be in the Elite again and I'm very grateful to Mayabeque for choosing me. Records come with time, and thanks to God, I've been able to keep playing on the field with results over the years. The main goal is to help the team, that's where my focus is, and the records will come as the games go on."
