Javier Ernesto Martín Gutiérrez, widely recognized as "Spider-Man" and a triple champion in Cuban mixed martial arts, underwent a psychiatric evaluation yesterday at a specialized institute. According to his sister, Yuneisy Gutiérrez, who shared the news on social media, the specialists concluded that he has no mental health problems.

This finding directly contradicts the narrative the regime attempted to construct to discredit the athlete's protests. Razones de Cuba, a propaganda outlet linked to counterintelligence, had published an article titled "From the Balcony to Villa Marista: What Anti-Cuba Media Hides About the Spider-Man Case," implying "behaviors associated with undiagnosed psychiatric disorders" and describing alleged symptoms such as "incessant shouting, disjointed accusations, and isolation."

The 34-year-old Martín Gutiérrez was apprehended on April 24 by about ten plainclothes agents on 90th Street between 41st and 43rd in Marianao, Havana. The agents assaulted him when he resisted and transported him in an unmarked black vehicle to Villa Marista, the headquarters of State Security.

Protests and Arrest

His arrest followed over eight days of peaceful protests from the balcony of his home on Avenida 31 in Marianao. During these protests, he denounced the social crisis, hunger, street violence, the use of synthetic drugs known as "el kímico," and the fact that women and children are forced to scavenge for food in the trash. He also leveled criticism directly at Miguel Díaz-Canel, declaring that "the communist system is dead."

In response to the regime's accusations, his partner Lisandra Cuza had previously denied any health issues, asserting, "He is in excellent health." Yesterday's psychiatric evaluation confirms this claim, dealing a blow to the official strategy of pathologizing dissent.

Family's Reaction and Historical Context

Yuneisy Gutiérrez was unequivocal in sharing the evaluation results, stating, "Here's the information for those who had the nerve to label Javi as crazy." She further emphasized that Spider-Man "only desires what is prohibited by that government—freedom of expression, an end to misery, no more blackouts, no more cruelty, and the chance to live as human beings, not as wild animals."

Cuba's use of psychiatry as a political weapon has a long history. Since the 1960s, influenced by the Soviet model, the regime has falsely diagnosed dissidents with paranoid schizophrenia, confining them to the Mazorra Psychiatric Hospital, as documented by Amnesty International since 1977. In 2017, Daniel Llorente was held for nearly a year at Mazorra after protesting with an American flag, despite medical reports not supporting his internment.

Ongoing Legal Challenges

In addition to the psychiatric evaluation, the family confirmed after visiting Spider-Man that the regime is attempting to impose a new charge of "inciting the population to protest." The athlete has already made his first formal statement to the authorities in the presence of his lawyer.

The case has also sparked outrage due to a comment made by Sandro Castro, Fidel Castro's grandson, who posted a message on Instagram regarding the athlete's situation. This comment led to a wave of mass condemnation on social media against the heir of the Castro dynasty.
