Anaísta Mayo Puente, an 18-year-old from Marianao, Havana, is in a critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit at Juan Manuel Márquez Pediatric Hospital following an accident that occurred early on Saturday, April 25, in the area known as "las ocho vías."
Her cousin, Yudeyvis Reinoso, publicly accused through a live Facebook broadcast that Anaísta went out that night with her ex-boyfriend, Alejandro Carbonell Mora, 24, and videos found on Anaísta's phone reveal that they were engaged in an illegal motorcycle race.
"We discovered they were in a motorcycle race from the videos on my cousin's phone. Because he never mentioned they were racing," Reinoso asserted.
Anaísta was discovered unconscious at the scene. A bystander performed CPR and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to restore her pulse before she was transported to the National Hospital and later to the pediatric hospital in Marianao.
The family only learned of the incident on Saturday, April 25, at 9 a.m. through a neighbor working in intensive care, not from the accompanying individual.
The young woman underwent a nine-hour surgery on her head. "They removed two pieces of her skull, which are bones, and stored them in her abdomen, so in a month, 40 days, or 25 days, if she recovers, they can reattach them because her brain is extremely swollen," her cousin explained.
At the time of the report, Anaísta was intubated, in a coma, feverish, and unresponsive to stimuli.
Concerns Over Police Handling
The family points to several irregularities in the police's actions. Carbonell Mora lacks a driver's license, and the motorcycle he was riding was borrowed; the motorcycles involved vanished from the scene before police arrival; and the alleged responsible party for the crash is under protective custody yet free.
Reinoso also alleged that the police officer in charge of the case claimed Anaísta "had no family," despite the fact that she was at her relatives' home the night of the accident.
A critical detail for the family is that Carbonell Mora emerged unscathed. "You had no injuries; supposedly there was a crash, and nothing happened to you. All her injuries are to the head, and she is critically ill with life-threatening conditions. You don't have friction burns, scratches, or bruises," Reinoso lamented.
The cousin further accused the young man's father of having connections with a government official in Marianao, which she believes explains the inaction of the local police unit.
"His father has acquaintances, and he manages for a government official here in Marianao," she noted.
A Widespread Issue of Road Safety
This case highlights the severe road safety crisis in Cuba, where illegal motorcycle races are a recurring issue.
Earlier this year, in January, a young man died in Contramaestre during an illegal race after colliding with a trailer. In September 2025, a police operation in Pinar del Río dismantled illegal races with arrests and vehicle seizures.
According to the National Road Safety Commission, Cuba recorded 7,538 traffic accidents in 2025, resulting in 750 fatalities and 6,718 injuries; 63% of cases involved motorcycles, and 31% of drivers lacked a license.
"Díaz Canel, this is about you, because these are your officials, your pawns. I want justice and will not be silent until my cousin receives justice," vowed Reinoso, who promised to release all videos from the day of the accident and continue live broadcasts until the authorities respond.
