The Municipal Operations and Rescue Group of the Cuban Red Cross successfully carried out a daring rescue of an elderly man with a hip fracture in the remote community of Palenque Arriba, one of the most difficult-to-access areas in the Yateras municipality, Guantánamo province.

Aris Arias Batalla shared on Facebook that the rescue team had to endure several kilometers on foot under the scorching sun, navigate river crossings, traverse rocky paths, and cut through the dense tropical vegetation characteristic of the mountainous region where Palenque Arriba is situated.

"The typical summer heat and sun, river crossings, trails, rocky paths, and vast shrubs of typical vegetation could not deter the Cuban Red Cross Municipal Operations and Rescue Group in Yateras," Arias described in his post.

He also posted multiple images that vividly depict the challenges faced by the rescuers during the operation.

Despite these formidable obstacles, the rescue team managed to stabilize the patient on-site and secure him on a metal stretcher before commencing the evacuation process.

"The Red Cross rescuers successfully stabilized the patient and evacuated him safely, ensuring his physical well-being throughout the journey," the post highlighted.

After completing the evacuation, the elderly man was transported to the Fausto Favier Favier Polyclinic, the main healthcare facility in the Palenque area of Yateras, where he received specialized medical care for his recovery.

Recognition for the operation was specifically directed at Wilfredo Piñeiro and his team, who led the mission.

Challenges of Yateras' Terrain

Yateras stands as one of Cuba's most mountainous and isolated municipalities, with nearly 100% mountain terrain and communities integrated into the Turquino Plan, a program aimed at mountainous regions.

Access to Palenque Arriba requires crossing the Palenque River up to seven times, and heavy rains can isolate the area for over 15 days, underscoring the magnitude of the rescue task. This extreme geographical context turns operations like this into exceptionally challenging endeavors for any emergency team.

This was not the first time the group has operated under similar conditions: in October 2025, following Hurricane Melissa, the Red Cross in Yateras rescued two patients stranded in the mountains, one suffering from appendicitis and the other from multiple injuries.

Images from the rescue show four to six rescuers in white Cuban Red Cross shirts, red protective helmets, and rubber boots, transporting the elderly man on a stretcher covered with a green blanket through the rugged terrain.

"This action reaffirms the Red Cross's commitment to safeguarding lives and assisting the most vulnerable, even in the harshest conditions," concluded Arias Batalla, noting that "the team's swift coordination and professionalism were crucial to the rescue's success."
