The U.S. Department of State has announced a special edition of commemorative passports featuring an interior cover image of Donald Trump and his signature in gold lettering, as part of the celebrations for the nation's 250th Independence Day anniversary.

Fox News exclusively revealed the design, which features a portrait of Trump taken during his second inauguration. This image is surrounded by the text of the Declaration of Independence and a depiction of the Stars and Stripes.

Trump's signature is prominently displayed at the bottom of the same page in gold. The back cover showcases the 1777 American flag with the number "250" positioned among the original 13 stars.

Unique Historical Design

One of the interior pages includes a historic painting of the Founding Fathers signing the Declaration of Independence. According to Tommy Pigott, spokesperson for the Department of State, a "limited quantity" of these specially designed documents will be available at the Washington Passport Agency, distributed on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.

"As the United States marks its 250th anniversary in July, the State Department is set to unveil a limited edition of passports to honor this historic milestone," Pigott stated.

The limited run is expected to be around 25,000 copies, with a release slated for July 2026 to coincide with the Declaration of Independence's signing anniversary. Security features will remain unchanged, and there will be no alterations to the application process or fees.

Controversy Over Presidential Portrait

This unprecedented initiative has drawn criticism. Edward Kolla, a Georgetown University professor and passport history expert, emphasized that no U.S. passport has ever featured a sitting president's image. He pointed out that no country includes a head of state in their passport designs.

Kolla described the idea as "bizarre," noting that U.S. passports are issued in the name of the Secretary of State, not the president. The current design, adopted in 2021, includes only generic patriotic imagery such as Mount Rushmore, without individual portraits.

Trump's Influence on Federal Institutions

This passport is part of a broader trend during the Trump administration of branding federal institutions and services with his name and likeness. Comparable efforts include replacing a public contest-winning photo of Glacier National Park with a close-up of Trump on the 2025 America the Beautiful annual pass.

The U.S. Mint is also seeking approval to mint a 24-karat gold coin featuring Trump's image for the same anniversary. Other initiatives include renaming the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, redesigning the White House Rose Garden, demolishing the East Wing to build a grand ballroom, and planning a 250-foot triumphal arch near Arlington Cemetery.

Furthermore, the administration has introduced the Trump Gold Card—an investor visa—the Trump Accounts, TrumpRx for discounted medications, and "Trump-class" warships.

The special edition passports will be available starting in July at the Washington Passport Agency, offered at no extra cost until the limited supply is exhausted.
