The U.S. Department of Commerce has taken action this week to revoke the export licenses for luxury items to Cuba, cutting off the supply of high-end goods such as Ferraris, Aston Martins, and Maseratis. This move is aimed at curbing the flow of luxury products that benefit the ruling elite of the Cuban regime, including jacuzzis and jet skis.

The decision was formalized in a letter dated last Monday, signed by Jeffrey I. Kessler, the Under Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Security. The correspondence was addressed to Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar.

"The Biden administration had previously granted export licenses for certain luxury items like Ferraris, Aston Martins, and Maseratis, as well as jacuzzis and jet skis. This situation is unacceptable. I have instructed the staff at the Bureau of Industry and Security to rescind these export authorizations," Kessler stated in the letter. This action was in response to pressure from lawmakers and local officials who had sent a joint letter on February 10 demanding concrete measures against the Cuban regime.

Institutional Pressure and Local Initiatives

Pressure on the administration had been building for weeks, starting with Miami-Dade County unanimously passing a resolution that called for decisive action against commercial ties with the Cuban government.

In a parallel effort, the Miami-Dade Tax Collector's Office launched a Compliance Transparency Page to identify businesses potentially connected to the regime and subsequently notified nearly 3,909 businesses about possible links with entities related to the Cuban government.

Congresswoman Salazar also directly challenged Under Secretary David Peters as part of these efforts, increasing the pressure on the administration to take effective action against the trade privileges benefiting Cuban regime officials.
