An elderly man named Dagoberto, renowned in his community for his work as a welder, was tragically murdered inside his own home in Gerona, Special Municipality of the Isle of Youth, during a nighttime power outage, in what appears to be a robbery.

Initial reports from the Facebook page "Nio Reportando un Crimen" indicate that the victim was attacked from behind with a sharp object and then overpowered.

"He was stabbed and subsequently had his throat slit," the report detailed.

The preliminary motive for the crime seems to be the theft of approximately $80 USD, according to the communicator.

"Several individuals have been detained in connection with the case," it was revealed.

The Impact of Power Outages on Crime

The Isle of Youth is currently facing a severe energy crisis. Previously thought to be immune to the blackouts affecting the rest of Cuba, the region has experienced increasing power deficits, reaching 25.7 megawatts in September.

The darkness resulting from these power cuts has become a key factor enabling criminal activities across Cuba. Recent statistics show a troubling rise in crime, with 2,833 verified offenses—a 115% increase—and thefts being the most common, accounting for 1,536 cases.

A Growing Pattern of Violent Crimes

Dagoberto's murder adds to a disturbing trend of violent crimes that have shaken the Cuban community. In a recent incident, an elderly man in Holguín was killed while cooking at home, and in Santa Clara, three family members were found murdered in their residence.

Older individuals are particularly at risk: in February of the previous year, an 83-year-old woman in Camagüey was brutally assaulted during a power outage, a case that deeply shocked the public.

Law Enforcement Challenges

Experts and citizens alike highlight that the insecurity is worsened by the weakening of law enforcement, as 20% of the police force has deserted, leaving entire communities vulnerable to crime.
