The Cuban Prison Documentation Center (CDPC) confirmed on Tuesday the death of Anamara Barona Rivero, 33, at the women's prison in El Guatao, Havana. Her family and activists have cast doubt on the official account of her death.

Hailing from the Los Pocitos neighborhood in Marianao, Anamara's passing was initially reported by various activists late last week. The CDPC later verified her death through local sources.

Alleged Incident After Family Visit

According to activists' reports, the tragic incident occurred following a family visit during which a prison official, referred to as a "reeducator," attempted to confiscate a cellphone from Anamara, leading to a physical altercation.

The same official was on duty that night, and rumors circulating both in her neighborhood and on social media suggest she took the opportunity to "settle scores" with Anamara.

Disputed Official Explanation

Anamara was discovered dead in her cell around four in the morning. The prison's official narrative suggests she committed suicide by hanging herself with a piece of clothing. However, her family and several witnesses strongly dispute this explanation.

Close acquaintances have reported that her body showed visible marks on the neck and was quickly transferred to the medical examiner without family being allowed to see her initially.

Heavy Security at the Funeral

The funeral took place at the family home, where special forces, police, and MININT officers were reportedly present, as noted by a crime reporter known as "Nio Reportando un Crimen."

El Guatao women's prison has a history of serious allegations. In 2023, family members raised concerns about the death of a woman identified as "Yessica," allegedly due to mistreatment at the facility.

In February 2025, Yoleisy Oviedo Rodríguez, a 44-year-old political prisoner detained for protesting against the regime, also died in the same prison.

Growing Concerns Over Cuban Prison System

The condition of Cuba's prison system continues to decline, as highlighted by human rights organizations documenting a surge in deaths in custody. In recent months alone, there have been 160 reports of torture across 43 prisons nationwide.
