Father Yuniel Quintero, affectionately known as "Lolo" and serving as the pastor of the Parishes of Our Lady of Carmen in Rodas and Our Lady of Charity in Cartagena, suffered a serious accident this Tuesday when he fell from the roof of a church in Cienfuegos, Cuba.

The Diocese of Cienfuegos released an official statement through the Vicar General, Fr. Manel Homar Toboso, informing the public about the incident and updating them on the priest's condition.

According to the latest medical report, Fr. Quintero has been admitted to the Polivalent Intensive Care Unit at Dr. Gustavo Aldereguía Lima General University Hospital. He is being closely monitored due to fractures in his hip and skull, and there are concerns about additional minor fractures in his right limb.

The diocese specifically requested that parishioners refrain from visiting the hospital at this time: "Please wait for further instructions on when visits may be allowed."

In their communication, the ecclesiastical institution urged the community to come together in prayer: "As a diocesan church, we unite in hopeful prayer for his swift recovery, placing him in the Lord's hands and under the intercession of the Virgin Mary."

Infrastructure Challenges Amidst Economic Strains

This accident highlights the severe deterioration of religious infrastructure in Cuba, worsened by decades of economic turmoil and the impact of hurricanes like Ian in 2022.

Many historic churches suffer from extensive damage due to leaks and lack of maintenance, leading to similar incidents in recent years. For instance, in June 2025, the cross of San Antonio de Padua Church in Cárdenas partially collapsed, injuring two people due to accumulated structural decay.

Fr. Quintero's accident also comes just two days after the death of Bishop Jorge Serpa, a native of Cienfuegos closely associated with the diocese, who passed away on April 19, 2026, adding another blow to the Catholic community in Cienfuegos.

The Parish of Our Lady of Carmen in Rodas, one of the two parishes under Fr. Quintero's care, has historical roots dating back to 1878, with its current structure established in 1885.

Dr. Gustavo Aldereguía Lima General University Hospital, where Fr. Quintero is currently being treated, is the primary healthcare center in the province of Cienfuegos, equipped with a Polivalent Intensive Care Unit since 1979.

The Diocese's official note concluded with Psalm 23 as a message of hope for the priest's recovery: "The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing."
