Madeleiny Fuentes León, a resident of Santa Isabel de las Lajas in Cienfuegos, was detained last Friday by agents from the Technical Investigations Department (DTI), which operates under the Ministry of the Interior (MININT). Her family believes the arrest is directly linked to the political activism of her sister, Madeley Fuentes León, who resides in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Madeley is part of Freedom for Cuba, a West Palm Beach-based organization known for organizing caravans and public demonstrations demanding the end of the dictatorship and a democratic transition in Cuba, as reported by Martí Noticias.

The operation began with a search of the sisters' home in Las Lajas. During the raid, DTI agents showed Madeleiny photographs of her sister with prominent figures in the Cuban opposition, including José Daniel Ferrer, the leader of the Patriotic Union of Cuba (UNPACU), who was exiled to Miami in October 2025, and Cuban-American activist María Teresa Rafaeli.

Connection to Local Detainees

Authorities also linked Madeleiny to another detainee from Las Lajas, José Luis Oliver Díaz, claiming that his phone contained images of her and messages from Madeley predicting the regime's downfall: "we are very active here, working hard, the dictatorship will fall."

Martí Noticias, which broke the story, noted that it could not ascertain the reason for Oliver Díaz's arrest or how long he had been detained.

Seizure and Arrest

During the search, officials confiscated the cell phones of the two women present at the home and seized 20,000 Cuban pesos in cash, equivalent to just over 30 dollars.

The immediate reason for Madeleiny's arrest was taking a photo of the officers from inside the house to alert her sister in the United States. Upon discovering the photo on her device, agents transported her to the penal instruction unit in Cienfuegos, colloquially known as "Everybody Sings."

Madeleiny remains incommunicado under a 72-hour investigation. Authorities have warned that if the photo of the officers is made public, she could face charges with sentences ranging from three to five years of imprisonment. The 92 arbitrary detentions in July 2025 alone, the most violent month against freedom of expression in three years, underscore the repressive context of this case.

Family's Legal Concerns

The sisters' mother was summoned to appear at the same police station on Monday morning. According to Law No. 143 of the Criminal Procedure, a search warrant must be clearly presented and explained at the time of the raid, something the family claims did not happen in this instance.

From exile, Madeley Fuentes publicly denounced the case and questioned the legality of the operation. "My mother says the search warrant was read quickly, but she was too nervous to understand what it said," she stated. Human rights organizations are demanding Madeleiny's immediate release, an end to harassment, and accountability from Cuban authorities.
