The State Road 710 (SR-710), also known as Warfield Boulevard, situated in Indiantown, west of Martin County, has emerged as a crucial pathway for drug and weapon trafficking in southern Florida, according to local authorities.
This rural, two-lane road links Palm Beach and Okeechobee counties, skirting Lake Okeechobee. Its secluded nature makes it a strategic choice for those looking to move between counties while avoiding more heavily monitored highways like the Florida Turnpike or I-95.
The Martin County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) reports that traffickers are intentionally selecting this road due to its low-profile nature.
"People believe they can use this stretch of road to smuggle drugs and commit crimes while bypassing other routes," Major Rubén Romero told Telemundo 51, highlighting SR-710 as a historical drug trafficking corridor in the region.
Recent traffic stops along this route have led to numerous arrests and seizures of fentanyl, methamphetamine, crack, syringes, and other drug-related paraphernalia.
During an operation last Friday, officers detained seven individuals, intercepting significant amounts of illegal substances and weaponry, including a reported stolen pistol and an additional firearm, as shared by the MCSO on Facebook.
A CBS12 report from February uncovered another police operation that exposed a network distributing drugs to minors, intensifying concerns about this route's impact on nearby communities.
"We are enforcing the law aggressively by conducting traffic stops, issuing citations, and apprehending individuals committing crimes," emphasized Romero.
The aim is to thwart crime before it reaches residential areas.
"We are not waiting for crime to enter our neighborhoods or schools," assured the officer.
Beyond drug trafficking, SR-710 has also been labeled a death trap due to its physical characteristics, with a history of severe accidents alarming both residents and officials.
Last year alone, 20 fatalities were recorded in the area.
"There is a persistent pattern of deaths on this road, and we need to address it," stated Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek to CBS12 in March.
Authorities cite several factors contributing to the high accident rates, including narrow lanes, heavy truck traffic, and driver behaviors such as speeding and risky overtaking.
Though road infrastructure improvement plans are in place, construction isn't expected to begin until 2030, leaving the issue unresolved in the short term.
Meanwhile, police have intensified their operations, resulting in thousands of citations, and are considering measures to mitigate risks, like enhanced signage and adjusted speed limits.
