Claudia Sheinbaum, President of Mexico, proposed a joint statement opposing military intervention in Cuba during her address at the IV Meeting in Defense of Democracy held in Barcelona this Saturday.
The gathering brought together leaders from 22 nations, including seven presidents, where Sheinbaum urged prioritizing dialogue and peace.
"I want to propose a declaration against military intervention in Cuba. Let dialogue and peace prevail," stated the Mexican leader at the conclusion of her speech.
Earlier, Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico has maintained its principles, even in isolation, by "raising its voice against the blockade on Cuba in 1962 when others remained silent."
"To this day, we believe, when talking about that small Caribbean island, that no nation is small, but rather great and steadfast when it defends its sovereignty and the right to a full life," she highlighted.
Sheinbaum expressed pride in Mexico's constitutional principles in foreign policy, including respect for the self-determination of peoples, non-intervention, peaceful resolution of disputes, rejection of the use of force, legal equality of states, and the ongoing fight for peace.
The president's proposal, who is an ally of the Castro regime, comes following reports suggesting that the Pentagon has been discreetly accelerating plans for potential military intervention in Cuba, causing alarm throughout the region.
When asked about the issue, U.S. President Donald Trump responded with ambiguity: "It depends on what your definition of military action is," he told the press, leaving all options open.
Trump had also announced what he described as a new dawn for Cuba after 70 years of waiting, referencing his plans for the Caribbean nation.
In the same vein, Colombian President Gustavo Petro voiced his concerns days earlier, stating that the United States "plans to attack with missiles, to impose itself" on the Island, and that "they should not do it."
When asked what Washington should do about Cuba, Petro was succinct: "What should be done with Cuba? Talk."
