The Canadian government announced a fresh wave of humanitarian aid for Cuba this Saturday, totaling 5.5 million Canadian dollars. This assistance will be funneled through international organizations to address the severe crisis plaguing the island nation.

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand and Secretary of State for International Development Randeep Sarai made the announcement, according to the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Of the total amount, five million Canadian dollars will be allocated to the Pan American Health Organization to safeguard the health of vulnerable populations. This funding aims to enhance access to essential services, medications, medical supplies, and primary care in hospitals.

The remaining 500,000 Canadian dollars will go to the World Food Program for food assistance, vital logistics, and fuel needs in the humanitarian response.

Ottawa emphasized that this aid will be delivered directly to the most vulnerable sectors through trusted organizations, bypassing the Cuban regime entirely.

Deepening Humanitarian Crisis in Cuba

The Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the situation on the island as "a deepening humanitarian crisis," characterized by repeated failures of the national power grid, prolonged blackouts lasting many hours across the island, and a severe fuel shortage.

On April 12, Cuba's electrical system recorded a maximum deficit of 1,871 MW, with only 1,927 MW available against a demand of 3,500 MW. These blackouts simultaneously affected up to 43% of the country.

Fuel Shortage and Economic Strain

The island has endured three consecutive months without regular supplies of diesel, fuel oil, and liquefied gas. This situation has been exacerbated by President Trump's executive order on January 29, which blocked oil shipments to Cuba, and a fire at the Nico López refinery on February 13.

A recent report indicates that Canada’s ongoing support to the Cuban regime amounts to 60,956,283 dollars, which has sparked debate about the true nature and intended recipients of Canada's cooperation with the island.

Francisco Pichón, the UN resident coordinator in Cuba, described the impact of the crisis as systemic and increasingly severe, with repercussions spreading across all sectors of Cuban society.
