Gerardo Hernández Criticizes Calls for Change in Cuba as Unpatriotic

Saturday, April 18, 2026 by Amelia Soto

Former spy Gerardo Hernández Nordelo recently lashed out at those advocating for change in Cuba, labeling them as "so-called Cubans."

During a gathering at the International Colloquium "Patria con Fidel," which aims to build a global propaganda front against what the regime calls "lies" about the island, the CDR loyalist boldly claimed that foreigners supporting the revolution are "more Cuban than the opposition."

"While some so-called Cubans wish catastrophe, pain, suffering, and death upon their people, you, with hearts more Cuban than theirs, stand here with us, supporting the Cuban revolution," he declared.

As the national coordinator of the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDR), Hernández recently shared a reel on Facebook showcasing Cubans dancing in the streets after the official event commemorating the 65th anniversary of the proclamation of the socialist nature of the Revolution. The event, held at the intersection of 23rd and 12th streets in Vedado, Havana, was presided over by Miguel Díaz-Canel.

The video attempted to counter criticism that Cubans attend the regime's political events under duress, as if a few images of dancing could refute decades of documented coercion.

The post came on a day when Cuba was experiencing one of its worst energy crises, with power outages affecting up to 43% of the country simultaneously. The electricity generation deficit reached 1,871 megawatts on April 10.

Comedian Ulises Toirac was quick to criticize the political event as a "waste of resources" amidst a crisis leaving hospitals without power, families without water, and millions of Cubans without basic food supplies. In this context, the UN prioritized energy access to assist two million people on the island.

The hypocrisy of Hernández is neither new nor isolated. Last Sunday, he posted a photo of the Havana Capitol with the caption "Beautiful Havana," sparking outrage among Cubans who highlight the stark contrast between official rhetoric and everyday reality. Many have labeled him as Cuba's most mediocre spy, while others remind us that the greatest blockade is that imposed by the government itself.
