The Miami-Dade County tax collector, Dariel Fernández, has announced the cancellation of business licenses for two companies accused of violating federal regulations concerning Cuba.
The affected businesses are Managua Travel Agency Inc., operating under the name Cuba Travel & Services, and R & R Logistics Customer Freight Solutions LLC.
In December, these companies had their Local Business Tax Receipts revoked after failing to respond to multiple legal requests for information issued by the tax collector's office.
Managua Travel Agency operates from three locations in Hialeah, Homestead, and Miami, whereas R & R Logistics is based in Doral.
Significance of the Local Business Tax Receipt
The Local Business Tax Receipt serves as the fundamental license required to run any business within Miami-Dade County.
Without this permit, a business is unable to legally open, bill, serve customers, or provide services in the county.
Wider Campaign Against Unlawful Operations
This measure is part of a broader campaign led by the tax collector, who previously alerted 3,909 county businesses about potential ties to Cuba and sent 50 new compliance notices to another group of companies under scrutiny.
The process has not been without controversy, as at least one business has filed a lawsuit against the county in response to these actions.
Additionally, a 46-year-old employee of the office, Waldersee Oge, was recently arrested on corruption charges.
Consequences of Operating Without a License
Fernández warned that continuing to operate without the required license could result in fines and other legal consequences, emphasizing his commitment to revoke Local Business Tax licenses for those who do not adhere to the law.
"The county will not permit businesses to operate outside the legal framework," he stressed.
