Danielle Álvarez, a Cuban-American Republican strategist and former senior advisor for Donald Trump's 2024 presidential campaign, made a bold statement on Tuesday urging the American left to stop providing cover and legitimacy to Cuba's communist regime.

In a pointed message shared on X, Álvarez stated, "The left continues to provide cover for a dictatorship. The Cuban regime imprisons dissidents, silences the press, and crushes freedom."

To substantiate her claims, she included harrowing accounts from her own family history.

"My uncle spent 17 years in prison for speaking out. My aunt was sent to the United States alone at 12, separated from her parents, with her childhood stolen. My mother was forced into a labor program so brutal it shattered children and robbed them of hope," Álvarez recounted.

She concluded with a direct accusation: "And the left still legitimizes this!"

Álvarez is the daughter of Cuban immigrants based in Miami who fled the island's political system, an experience she describes as a pivotal influence in her career.

The stories she shared highlight well-documented practices of the regime: the imprisonment of dissidents, the forced separation of families, and labor programs like the Military Units to Aid Production (UMAP), which affected approximately 30,000 people between 1965 and 1968, and the Schools in the Countryside, which since 1966, mandated children and teenagers to work in agriculture without compensation.

Álvarez's remarks come amid heightened pressure from the Trump administration against Havana, following explicit statements from U.S. officials targeting regime change.

In contrast, leftist organizations such as the Communist Party USA continue to publicly support the Cuban government, attributing the island's crisis to the embargo and opposing sanctions.

Álvarez boasts a high-profile political career: she served as Communications Director for the Republican National Committee during the 2022 midterm elections and as Communications Director for the Gulf South region in Trump's 2020 re-election campaign. Since September 2025, she has been a partner at Mercury Public Affairs, a bipartisan public strategy firm.

She is recognized as an expert in communication targeting the Latino electorate, particularly in Florida, and has consistently been an outspoken critic of the Cuban regime.

Understanding the Cuban Regime and U.S. Political Dynamics

What are the Military Units to Aid Production (UMAP) in Cuba?

The UMAP were labor camps in Cuba, operating between 1965 and 1968, where around 30,000 people were forced to work under harsh conditions as part of a controversial government initiative.

How has Danielle Álvarez's family history influenced her political stance?

Álvarez's family experienced repression and separation under Cuba's regime, shaping her critical view and motivating her advocacy against legitimizing the island's government.

Why do some U.S. leftist organizations support the Cuban government?

These organizations often attribute Cuba's economic hardships to the U.S. embargo and advocate against sanctions, viewing them as the primary obstacles to the island's prosperity.
