President Donald Trump of the United States issued a stern warning on Monday, declaring that any vessel attempting to breach the naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz will face the same "swift and ruthless" approach his administration employs against narcotics trafficking on the high seas.

In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump emphasized that Washington is not considering a conventional response to the swift boats of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Instead, he pointed to the direct application of lethal tactics already used in anti-drug operations in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific under the initiative known as Operation Southern Spear.

"Should any of these ships approach our blockade, they will be immediately neutralized, utilizing the same system we use against maritime drug traffickers. It's swift and ruthless," the president asserted.

The reference is to Operation Southern Spear, a campaign active since 2025 led by the United States Southern Command, focusing on intercepting and disabling vessels connected to drug trafficking.

This operation marks a shift in anti-drug strategy, involving direct assaults on drug-laden boats deemed threats. Numerous actions have been carried out, resulting in significant disruptions to criminal networks.

Trump claimed these operations have successfully curtailed the maritime drug flow into the United States, stating that 98.2% of shipments attempting entry by sea have been intercepted.

The president's warning extends this approach to the Persian Gulf, where the United States maintains a naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz following unsuccessful negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program.

While much of Iran's conventional navy has been decimated, Tehran retains a substantial number of fast attack boats, equipped with missiles and designed for swarm tactics, which are considered its primary tool for asymmetric warfare in the region.

Trump's message implies these vessels will be subject to the same rules of engagement as those used against drug traffickers: identification as a threat, immediate response, and use of lethal force without graduated escalation.

Iranian officials have condemned the U.S. blockade as illegal and have threatened potential retaliation. Nonetheless, the White House maintains that the measure is a response to Tehran's failure to reopen the crucial maritime passage for global energy trade.

With this stance, Washington reinforces an approach that merges conventional military operations with transnational security tactics, applying to the conflict with Iran a model already tested in the fight against drug trafficking in international waters.
