The mother of a six-year-old boy found wandering alone in the middle of the night on a Miami street has been taken into custody and brought before a judge. This incident has sparked significant concern over the lack of supervision and the delay in reporting the child's disappearance.

Annie Rivera, a 30-year-old woman, is now facing charges of child neglect without causing bodily harm.

Rivera, whose nationality has not been disclosed, was arrested on Thursday and appeared in Miami-Dade County court on Friday, where she broke down in tears during the bail hearing.

Unaware of Her Son's Absence

Investigations reveal the most troubling aspect for authorities was the mother's failure to report her son's disappearance, despite his extended absence from home.

"Since 11 p.m., this child had been missing, and no one reported it. We had to go to her house to inform her," stated Mike Vega, a spokesperson for the Miami Police, as reported by local media.

Authorities located Rivera around 11:40 a.m. on Thursday, over 12 hours after the child had been found.

According to police, Rivera claimed she was unaware her son was not at home. However, to reach her, officers had to piece together the child's identity using a flyer distributed in the media.

A Potential Tragedy Averted

The case came to light when the boy was discovered around 11 p.m. on Wednesday, walking alone near Northwest 7th Avenue and 17th Street in Allapattah.

A homeless man noticed him and decided to intervene, alarmed by the child's vulnerability at such an hour.

"I was looking around for a parent, but I didn’t see anyone. You know? So, I thought, what is this child doing out here at this time?" recounted Arnett Johnson to Local 10.

Johnson, who has been living on the streets for months, said he acted on instinct.

"God sent me there. I had to do what God told me to do," he stated.

After finding the boy, he took him to a nearby business and called the police, staying with the child until authorities arrived.

A Vulnerable Child Without Initial Identification

The boy, whose name has not been released, reportedly has a speech delay and could be on the autism spectrum, complicating his initial identification.

Investigators reported that amid efforts to understand the situation, the child mentioned, "Mommy left me here and went away."

Authorities struggled for hours to locate his family or find missing person reports matching his description.

The child is currently in the custody of the Florida Department of Children and Families and is reportedly in good health.

The incident has raised alarms about the extreme risk the boy faced while alone on the streets for hours, particularly in an area known for its dangers.

What could have ended in tragedy was diverted thanks to the intervention of a stranger. However, the investigation remains open to fully understand how the incident occurred and to assign responsibility.

Rivera faces charges of child neglect without causing bodily harm, classified as a third-degree felony under Florida Statute 827.03, which carries a penalty of up to five years in prison and fines up to $5,000.

She was assigned a $2,500 bail, which she has already posted, but once released, her access to the child will be restricted and supervised.

Authorities have indicated it is highly likely Rivera will lose custody of the child.

During Friday's hearing, it was also revealed that there was a prior case of potential neglect against Rivera.
