Authorities in Unión de Reyes, a town in the Matanzas province, have apprehended a young man accused of fatally stabbing another man during a public altercation, as confirmed by multiple sources.

The incident took place on Soberanía Street, between Ignacio Agramonte and Frank País, in the heart of the town, though the exact date remains unspecified. The two individuals reportedly got into a heated argument over personal issues, which tragically escalated into violence.

The Facebook page "Con Todos La Victoria," associated with the Ministry of the Interior (Minint), identified the assailant as José Luis Matos Lara, yet withheld the victim's identity.

Independent profile Nio shared additional insights into the identities and circumstances surrounding the crime. According to this unverified information, the victim was named Yuliesvi Mato and was allegedly demanding repayment of a debt, which triggered the deadly confrontation.

The same source claimed that the attacker, known as "Roki," drew a sharp object during the brawl, inflicting multiple fatal wounds on the victim. Matos reportedly surrendered to authorities later that day.

The Minint's account of the events cited "old grudges and personal problems" as the catalyst for the crime, omitting any mention of the alleged debt. The official narrative described the aggressor, the younger of the two, as having "lost control and wielded a knife directly to the chest," resulting in the victim's immediate death. They also stated that the assailant is now facing legal proceedings.

Family and friends of the deceased are demanding justice. The official statement acknowledged the incident's profound impact on the community: "What began as a personal dispute ended with a criminal case, two grieving families, and a neighborhood still talking about the event; the overwhelming sentiment is one of loss, with a strong call to end violence."

A Surge in Violence Across Cuba

This crime is part of a broader trend of increasing violence in Cuba. On March 15, two young men were killed in a knife fight in Jagüey Grande, also in Matanzas. On March 30, three family members were murdered in Santa Clara, leading to the arrest of five suspects days later.

In February, a man was fatally stabbed over a debt in Cienfuegos. Meanwhile, three individuals in Santiago de Cuba received life sentences for stabbing a motorcyclist 27 times.

Analysts and independent media suggest that Cuba is experiencing a new wave of violence, linked to institutional decline, economic crisis, and power outages that create opportunities for crime. The Cuban government does not publish official crime statistics, making it difficult to gauge the full extent of the problem.

The Cuban Citizen Audit Observatory (OCAC), an independent organization, documented 2,833 verified crimes in Cuba during 2025, highlighting a worrying surge in criminal activity.
