Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, shared a message on Easter Sunday urging unity, dialogue, and reconciliation in Venezuela. This message was broadcast from their confinement at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, where they have been held since their arrest three months ago.

The statement, filled with biblical references, was posted on the former leader's X and Telegram accounts. It reads: "Death does not win: Christ wins. Lies do not win: truth wins. Hatred does not win: love wins."

Maduro invoked the resurrection of Lazarus, urging people to remove "the stone of hatred, lies, division, and resentment." He added, "There is no resurrection without passion. First comes the cross, pain, and sacrifice, but then comes new life."

The irony of Maduro's message is stark: the same man who, in January 2023, accused the Catholic Church in Venezuela of embodying evil, now appeals to Christian faith from a cell in New York.

This marks the second public message from Maduro and Flores since their capture on January 3, 2026, during the U.S. "Operation Absolute Resolution" in Caracas.

Their first message came on March 28, shortly after their second court appearance before Judge Alvin Hellerstein at the Southern District of New York Federal Court, where they claimed to be well, steadfast, calm, and in constant prayer. They called for continued efforts to strengthen peace, national unity, reconciliation, forgiveness, and reunion among all Venezuelans.

During that hearing, the judge dismissed a defense motion to drop the charges, prompting laughter in the courtroom, while Maduro exhibited nervous tics, frequently drank water, and fidgeted.

Maduro faces four federal charges, each carrying a potential life sentence: narcoterrorism conspiracy, cocaine importation conspiracy, possession of machine guns and destructive devices, and conspiracy to possess weapons of war. Flores is charged with drug trafficking conspiracy and weapons possession offenses.

The stark contrast between Maduro's reconciliation rhetoric and his authoritarian past is glaring. According to Penal Forum, his regime amassed over 18,944 political detentions since 2014, with Venezuela holding 777 political prisoners as of January 2026, despite some releases following his arrest.

As Maduro preaches from his cell, Venezuela enters a new phase under interim President Delcy Rodríguez, appointed by the Supreme Court on January 5, 2026. She has fostered unprecedented ties with the Trump administration, which formally recognized her government on March 9, announcing a deal for Venezuelan mineral exploitation. On April 1, the U.S. removed Rodríguez from the sanctions list.

Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar succinctly captured the moment: all dictators ultimately face accountability.
