"United will increase the fee by $10 for the first and second checked bags for customers traveling within the United States, Mexico, Canada, and Latin America, starting with tickets purchased on Friday, April 3," the airline stated.
Under the new pricing, the cost for the first checked bag will be $45 if paid in advance and $50 if added within 24 hours of the flight. The second bag will rise to $55 and $60, respectively, while the third bag will see the most significant jump from $150 to $200.
Before April 3, the fees stood at $35 for the first bag, $45 for the second, and $150 for the third if paid ahead of time.
Discounts and Exemptions for Certain Travelers
United clarified that some customers will not face these additional charges.
"Holders of United Chase credit cards, MileagePlus Premier members, active-duty military personnel, and customers traveling in premium cabins can still check one bag for free," the company noted.
Additionally, an incentive remains for those who pay early:
"Customers in most markets will continue to enjoy a $5 discount if they pay for their bags online 24 hours before their flight."
